Laying up to take their shot, the first teaser has swooshed in for MBC’s new sports-comedy Director Maeng’s Internet Troll, introducing us to the struggling basketball director Park Sung-woong (Dongjae the Good or the Bastard) as well as his online nemesis Park Su-oh (previously known as Park Sang-hoon) (The Witch).
In his younger years, our protagonist (Park Sung-woong) was a star basketball player as fierce as his full name, Maeng Gong – which can be translated as “heavy attack.” But the word Gong by itself can mean “ball” or “zero,” and when we meet Gong on the court in present day, his career is sadly closing in on the latter. As the teaser explains through its opening sequence, a dismayed Gong is the current director of our story’s Big Pandas team who have now ranked in 7th place for three years in a row.
Suffice to say, the game is a mess, the team is a mess, and Gong is soon chewed out by Choi Byung-mo (For Eagle Brothers) for Big Pandas’ falling performance. Their poor stats also put them in danger of getting eliminated from the playoffs and a good chunk of the negative comments in the forums are targeted at Gong’s incompetence.
Here enters highschooler Go Hwa-jin (Park Su-oh), a basketball aficionado with a personal vendetta against Gong and who dedicates himself as exclusively Gong’s internet troll. Despite being young, though, Hwa-jin makes keen assessments about Big Pandas’ gameplay as well as the problems affecting the team. The story will thus have Gong reluctantly putting his pride aside and teaming up with Hwa-jin to help our underdog Pandas live up to their true name.
With production led by PD Hyun Sol-ip (You Drive Me Crazy) and rookie writer Kim Dam (MBC’s 2024 writing contest winner), MBC’s Director Maeng’s Internet Troll will be unfolding its 2-episode tale on May 23 -24.
