Yeom Jung-ah sells and refunds Won Jin-ah in The Defects

Promos have kicked off on ENA for the new action-thriller called The Defects (previously i Shopping), assembling our cast and crew at the first script reading, where we first meet our story leads: Yeom Jung-ah (No Way Out – The Roulette), Won Jin-ah (Unicorn), Choi Young-joon (The Trunk), and Dex a.k.a. Kim Jin-young (Tarot).

The dark tale is adapted from a popular and award-winning webtoon, with Yeom Jung-ah starring as the well-respected Kim Se-hee, the director of a large hospital and the chair of its charity foundation. However, her philanthropic gestures are basically all for show as Se-hee is also the secret head of a child-trafficking cartel and she stands by the elitist beliefs that only those with superior genetics should live.

Presumably this is where our title comes in, as some of the “adopted” children are “refunded” if deemed unsatisfactory by the clients parents and these so-called Defects are left for dead. This includes Won Jin-ah playing Kim Ah-hyun. But she along with some others manage to narrowly escape and Ah-hyun becomes their de facto leader as they begin to take steps towards revenge.

Also helping them is Choi Young-joon in the role of baddie-turned-goodie Woo Tae-shik. As a member of the traffickers, he was ordered to get rid of the returned children. But his guilty conscience got the better of him and Tae-shik became their protector instead. Hiding them away in secret, he even teaches the children on survival and defense.

Rounding out the main group, Dex takes on the part of a newly created character named Jung-hyun, who isn’t part of the original webtoon. Raised by Se-hee to be her obedient human shield and weapon, Jung-hyun is her representative on site, running the illegal child-trafficking operations and getting his hands dirty in Se-hee’s stead.

Directed by PD Oh Ki-hwan (Not Yet Thirty, SF8) with Ahn So-jung penning the scripts, ENA’s The Defects will have a runtime of 8 episodes and is slated to premiere on July 21.
