Yeom Jung-ah disposes of Won Jin-ah and The Defects

The first teaser has dropped for ENA’s action thriller The Defects capturing the chilling relationship between “mother” Yeom Jung-ah (No Way Out – The Roulette) and first survivor Won Jin-ah (Unicorn). Adapted from the webcomic i Shopping, which is the original Korean title, the show centers around a child-trafficking cartel that treats adoption like window shopping and accepts refunds from dissatisfied customers.

The teaser opens with a narration from Kim Ah-hyun (Won Jin-ah) asking if there is a god in this world, and the scene cuts to hospital director Kim Se-hee (Yeom Jung-ah) who asks to be called mother. As Ah-hyun continues her plea, she does not even expect her wish for a mom to be granted, and instead, just wants to survive. The teaser reveals a slew of people being submerged in concrete, and among the victims is Ah-hyun.

Somehow escaping their deaths, Ah-hyun and her group of survivors make their way past a burning building only for Se-hee’s hunting dog Dex a.k.a. Kim Jin-young (Tarot) to be right on their heels. In a world where they no longer exist, these abandoned children will need to fight in order to make it out alive, and their enemies will do anything to stop them. From fists to guns, the body count increases as their conflict continues, and Ah-hyun manages to dodge a few close calls as she gets closer to her goal.

Though Ah-hyun screams at her heartless captors how they could go this far, in their eyes, she and the others are nothing more than returned goods that need to be destroyed. Thus begins Ah-hyun’s revenge story as the teaser ends with Se-hee warning her previous charges that they should have never come back.

Directed by PD Oh Ki-hwan (Not Yet Thirty, SF8) with Ahn So-jung penning the scripts, ENA’s The Defects is slated for eight episodes and premieres on July 21 in the Monday-Tuesday slot.
