One unplanned kiss later, and the preestablished love story of The First Night With the Duke unravels as fangirl turned background character Seohyun (Song of the Bandits) steals the heart of male lead Taecyeon (Heartbeat). What will happen to the plot of the original novel now, and will our new protagonist get her happily ever after?
The latest teaser from KBS throws us into the thick of things. After spending a steamy night with lady Cha Seon-chaek (Seohyun), Yi Beon (Taecyeon) no longer sees her as another fanciful fling but the woman of his dreams. As a man, the only path forward is through, which to Yi Beon means announcing their engagement to everyone — a surprise to all in attendance, including his new fiance.
Unbeknownst to Yi Beon, Seon-chaek is actually a normal college student who ended up inside a novel, and she is shocked by these unorthodox changes to the story. She wonders if everyone in this universe charges ahead as soon as sparks fly, and it seems our hero is not the only lovesick character around.
The novel’s original heroine Jo Eun-ae, played by Kwon Han-sol (The Witch), is actually smitten with Seo Beom-joon (The Fiery Priest 2) who plays second lead Jung Soo-gyeom. She pushes him up against a wall, and he asks if she will be okay if they are seen together like this. Of course, Soo-gyeom starts developing feelings too, but will his confession be directed at Eun-ae or newcomer Seon-chaek?
In the midst of all these tangled love triangles, villainess Do Hwa-seon, played by Ji Hye-won (Hierarchy), refuses to be usurped by a background character and tries to woo Yi Beon. She even walks into his room where he waits for someone half-naked, and Seon-chaek groans at this turn of events. Though she worries about the plot treading into makjang territory, Seon-chaek can’t help but get butterflies as Yi Beon chooses her over everyone else, and maybe, against her better judgement, they could actually make it work.
Co-directed by Lee Woong-hee (My Perfect Stranger) and Kang Soo-yeon with scripts written by Jeon Sun-young, KBS’s The First Night With the Duke premieres next week on June 11 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.
