When the Phone Rings is a suspense romance that follows the story of the youngest spokesperson of the Blue House (Yoo Yeon Seok) after he gets a mysterious phone call that his wife (Chae Soo Bin) who is a sign language interpreter has been kidnapped.
Yoo Yeon Seok plays Baek Sa Eon who is a spokesperson for the Blue House that comes from a political family. He entered into a contract marriage with the daughter of a big news agency, and the couple has been cold and distant with each other. Things begin to change though after a mysterious phone call.
Chae Soo Bin is Hong Hee Joo. She is a sign language interpreter who is mute. She’s had a challenging life, and is in a loveless marriage. Then things get more complicated when she is kidnapped.
When the Phone Rings was a pretty fun ride with a good dose of suspense along with a side of soapy dramatics. The story is quick paced and gets going right off the back. What seems like a fairly straightforward story of a kidnapping meant as an attack on Sa Eon soon takes an unexpected turn as a game of cat and mouse takes shape. We also get a variety of fun villains causing trouble throughout the show.
The drama had several surprising twists and great cliffhangers. There are definitely a few plot points that require some suspension of disbelief that you just have to roll with and some very questionable character decisions, but for the most part, it was easy to go along for the ride. The story stays engaging all the way through with a good balance of suspense and more heartfelt moments.
The relationship between Sa Eon and Hee Joo is a complicated one that is filled with secrets and lies. They’ve been cold and distant with each other since they were married with Sa Eon treating Hee Joo harshly and her just wanting to break free from this prison.
We get some decent character exploration as we dive into the troubled pasts that both Sa Eun and Hee Joo faced. They have very difficult issues to deal with, and when they find themselves in a high pressure situation, they both get the chance to grow. It was interesting watching this couple learn about each other and see their relationship in a different light.
Overall, When the Phone Rings was a very entertaining watch. I really liked the mix of suspense and drama along with a complicated romance. I was always interested in what was going to happen next, and it was solid all the way through. The ending episodes felt a bit rushed, but I left the drama feeling very satisfied and had a great time with it.
My Rating: 8/10
