Tron: Ares marks the third chapter in the iconic Tron series, and it’s hard to believe that fans are finally getting a new installment after such a lengthy wait.
One defining feature of this franchise is the long gaps between films.
Fans of the original 1982 Tron had to endure an incredible 28-year wait before Tron: Legacy was released in 2010. And now, after another 15 years, the next film is almost here: Tron: Ares, set for release on October 10, 2025.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, with a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow, Jack Thorne, and Tron creator Steven Lisberger, this latest film takes the familiar connection between humans and the digital world to new heights—especially with the collision of these two realms.
At the heart of the story is Ares, a highly advanced program that is sent from the digital world to the real world on a crucial mission. For the first time, the action isn’t confined to the Grid—it’s breaking into our reality.
Eve Kim (played by Greta Lee) is an ordinary woman living in the real world, until the collapse of worlds thrusts her into a chaotic battle between the digital and physical domains.
The trailer opens with a dark cityscape, lit only by the glowing lights from windows in the buildings. The calm is soon shattered by the sound of sirens.
Two motorcyclists dressed in black, with neon red accents, are speeding through the city, evading the police. They seem out of place—like they don’t belong in this world.
Then one of the riders raises an arm, sending a laser blast that cuts a police car in half, its pieces glitching and vanishing as if the laws of reality are unraveling.
As the riders flee, a voice is heard saying:
“I am searching for something. Something we’ll never truly comprehend.”
The next scene shows Eve Kim, frozen in terror in the middle of a street, gazing up at the sky. Around her, people are holding their phones up, filming a massive black-and-red object—resembling a UFO—hovering over the city.
In the following shots, Eve is seen running for her life through buildings, the glowing black-and-red object in pursuit. The atmosphere is tense, as the sounds from the trailer convey a sense of dread and otherworldliness.
Then we catch a glimpse of the Grid, but it’s completely different from how we’ve seen it before. The usual neon blue and teal colors are replaced with black and neon red, as though something has infected it, turning it hostile.
WORLDS WILL COLLIDE
As the trailer builds toward its end, we see the screen flicker out into a void.
Next, Ares is brought into existence, played by Jared Leto—his body slowly taking shape, its structure glowing with bright red circuits.
Then, a familiar voice breaks the silence. It’s the voice of Kevin Flynn, portrayed by Jeff Bridges, speaking off-screen with a calm but serious tone.
“Ready? ‘Cause there’s no going back.”
It’s a moment filled with nostalgia for fans, hinting at the stakes and the journey ahead.
Jared Leto plays the role of Ares, an advanced program who is brought into the real world.
Greta Lee stars as Eve Kim, an ordinary woman whose life is turned upside down by the collision of worlds.
Jeff Bridges returns to his iconic role as Kevin Flynn, reprising his character from the first two films.
The cast also includes Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, and Hasan Minhaj.
Tron: Ares is set to release on October 10, 2025.
After years of waiting, the Grid is finally returning—this time, it’s crossing into our world.
Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait another 15 to 28 years for a potential fourth movie!
