A new poster and teaser set have dropped on Netflix, making us puzzle over the true identity of our Dear Hongrang – played by a shadowy Lee Jae-wook (The Impossible Heir) – and how he came to the doorstep of the wealthy merchant Shim family, announcing himself to be the family’s long lost son.
Ever since 12 years ago, the Shims had been hopelessly waiting after the child Hong-rang mysteriously disappeared and the trailer begins with the now adult Hong-rang’s (Lee Jae-wook) miraculous return – though he alleges amnesia about what happened. Mom Eom Ji-won (For Eagle Brothers) is convinced he’s her son and insists that he’s properly reinstated as their family heir. However, the more she sees him, half-sister Jo Boa (Destined With You) feels certain that this Hong-rang is a fraud and, to her credit, we do see that Hong-rang is hiding secrets.
Adopted brother Jung Ga-ram (Gangnam B-Side) thus steps in, requesting dad Park Byung-eun (Hyper Knife) to dig into Hong-rang’s missing past and verify the truth. In the action sequence that follows, we get a curious glimpse of our story’s Joseon prince and presumably he’ll have an invested role in this mystery-sageuk’s tale, because one does not cast Kim Jae-wook (Melo Movie) to simply look pretty and sit still. Elsewhere, Hong-rang is busy fending off assailants and rushing to the rescue of his maybe sister Jae-yi (Jo Boa). Toeing the line into fauxcest romance, the teaser then closes on a wintry scene with our two leads.
With production for the novel adaptation led by PD Kim Hong-sun (Bait, Money Heist – Joint Economic Area) and writer Kim Jin-ah (Dr. Brain), Netflix’s Dear Hongrang will be premiering on May 16 in just two more weeks.
