In “The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun “, Baek Seol-Hee is the mother of Baek Mi-So. She is a single mother and restaurant owner who has raised her child well. Her mother works hard to support her daughter, but her daughter also works a part-time job after school to support herself. Her future looks bright, and when she graduates from high school, she should be able to attend a college or university. Baek Mi-So affectionately refers to her mother a Madam Baek.
One night at the coffee shop where Baek Mi-So worked, a rude customer came in and caused trouble. The girl was a spoiled rich brat, an illegitimate child of a wealthy businessman, who didn’t even know her own mother. She is used to assaulting people if she doesn’t get her way. Who she is did not matter. Baek Mi-So stood up to her. Why? Because Madam Baek told her that she should never tolerate injustice. Everything that happened was caught on the video camera at the shop. Meaning? Meaning the rich brat could be identified, and the video evidence showed that she clearly committed a crime.
But the rich girl is used to her big sister always covering up her misdeeds, so she wasn’t concerned. Anything she did would be swept under the rug. She never had to face the consequences. That’s why she left the coffee shop angry, and then one night after work, she and her hired thugs grabbed Baek Mi-So, dragged her into an alley, and assaulted her.
Baek Mi-So survived the brutal assault, but her mother, Baek Seol-Hee, wanted the criminal brought to justice. This was her first time dealing with the law, so she didn’t realize she was dealing with a crooked detective. He arrested someone else, closed the case, and, of course, received a secret payment from the rich girl’s family.
Closing the case and letting the real culprit go free. That was unacceptable. Baek Seol-Hee started digging and found out the wealthy family that was covering up for the girl who had assaulted her daughter. The big sister tried to pay her to keep quiet and not pursue the matter. But Madam Baek stood firm, looked the woman in the eye, and asked the sister if she thought money was all it took to settle this matter.
It was clear that Madam Baek wasn’t going to stop until the culprit was brought to justice.
It was also clear that Madam Baek didn’t know the kind of treacherous, ruthless people she was about to take on.
They had a lot of experience being mean and nasty, covering up their “dirt”, making innocent people take the blame, and on and on and on. They could bury her and her daughter, and nobody would come looking for them.
Baek Seol-Hee had no money, no connections, and no power. All she has is strong maternal love and a fervent desire for justice. She won’t back down!
