After building a massive international fanbase and racking up over 2.6 billion views, the hit Korean web novel and webtoon “The Remarried Empress” is being adapted into a live-action series, coming exclusively to Disney+.
Based on the chart-topping webtoon of the same name, “The Remarried Empress” is a romantic fantasy drama that follows Navier, a perfect empress whose life is upended when her husband returns home with a mistress and demands a divorce. Determined not to let the emperor dictate her future, Navier grants his request — but, in turn, asks to marry a rival prince from the Western Kingdom. What follows is a gripping tale of political intrigue, romance, and a queen’s fight to reclaim her stolen power.
Shin Min-a (“Karma,” “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”) stars as the beloved Empress Navier. Ju Ji-hoon (“Lightshop Keeper,” “The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call”) portrays Emperor Sovieshu of the Eastern Empire. Lee Jong-suk (“Big Mouth,” “W”) plays Heinrey, the Crown Prince of the Western Kingdom who harbors a hidden secret. Lee Se-young (“The Red Sleeve,” “The Crowned Clown”) takes on the role of Rashta, a former runaway slave turned concubine who sets her sights on Navier’s throne.
The series will be adapted for streaming by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choong-yeol (“The Uncanny Counter”) and directed by Cho Su-won (“Still 17,” “Pinocchio”).
“The Remarried Empress” joins a growing slate of Korean originals on Disney+. Earlier this year, “A Shop for Killers” — named one of The New York Times’ Best International Shows of 2024 — was renewed for a second season. Other upcoming Korean dramas include “Nine Puzzles,” a dark criminal mystery starring Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku; “Low Life,” a treasure-hunting adventure with Ryu Seung-ryong; and the international conspiracy thriller “Tempest,” starring Gianna Jun, Gang Dong-won, John Cho, and Michael Gaston.
