So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
Weak Hero Class 2: I’ve missed Park Ji-hoon’s very sad eyes! Weak Class Hero 1 was one of my favorite dramas of 2022 and I’ve been on tenterhooks waiting for season 2 to drop. It didn’t disappoint, though it didn’t quite have the same impact on me that the first season had. Some aspects of the writing did feel a little over the top, like the massive criminal conspiracy that seemed to be both everywhere, yet lacked teeth or staying power. However, the performances from the cast more than made up for it. There wasn’t a single weak link; I was impressed at how every actor, from the main cast to the secondary cast managed to imbue such dimension into their roles. Each character felt so real and human. More than anything, I was relieved to see the drama end on a happy note–these boys have been through enough!
Heavenly Ever After: I’m glad I stuck with this show, because Episodes 5 and 6 have been my favorite so far. Through the first couple of weeks, I struggled with the setup of the universe because I kept wondering if we were actually seeing heaven–or if Hae-sook had landed in the Bad Place after all. It was like a part of me couldn’t let go and get emotionally invested because I was worried the curtain would fall and it would be revealed that everything was a hellish plot to torment Hae-sook, or that she had been given accidental access to heaven somehow. Now that I can put all my heaven/hell-related stress behind me, I’m letting myself just enjoy the relationships between Hae-sook, Nak-jun, and Young-ae. Seeing the love between them is so touching; I’m glad for the humor sprinkled throughout the show. It’s just the right amount of levity to keep things from getting too heavy. I’ve enjoyed the relationship between Hae-sook and Som-yi as well, so I hope this week’s episodes give us a better look at who Som-yi was and what she’s running from.
Currently covering: Resident Playbook
Spring of Youth: Cute start, but it’s not quite resonating with me. I also found the end of Episode 1 extremely rushed. Like, the whole situation with the fake fight escalated into a scandal so fast and choppily that I literally thought the episode had ended and transitioned into a preview for Episode 2 without me realizing. I’ll give it another couple of episodes, though, if only for Seo Hye-won.
Weak Hero Class 2: I’m so glad none of the new characters became a baddie or ended up in a coma this season. I honestly wasn’t expecting this drama to have a happy ending, but I’m pleased that Si-eun and friends survived unscathed — even if Season 2 lacked the same level of emotional tension and character development found in Season 1 because the stakes weren’t as high.
