Strumming heartstrings with Ha Yoo-joon in Spring of Youth

Blooming alongside the springtime flowers is an uplifting tale to the tune of a campus romance, in SBS’s Spring of Youth. When a top star is unceremoniously kicked out of his idol band overnight, he enrolls in university to embark on a new path. There, not only is he given a second chance to pursue his musical dreams, but he also encounters someone who sends his heart aflutter.

The teaser opens on an idyllic shot of our main pair running through a park on a bright spring day, beaming at each other as they bask in the warm sunlight. “The moment I laid my eyes on Kim Bom, I realized this,” muses Ha Yoo-joon (Namib) as the exiled pop star Sa-gye. “That the reason for me coming here was so I could meet her.”

Just as her name suggests, Bom — played by Park Ji-hoo (Little Women) — glows in the dulcet tones of spring. Then, abruptly: a record-scratch moment. “Can’t you see?” asks Bom, as she presses down on a single piano key. “That I just played a mi note.” Which can also be interpreted as “That you’re off your rocker,” as the arrow that points to Sa-gye helpfully suggests. Ha. Cue a montage of Sa-gye calling Bom’s name and bounding after her like a lovestruck puppy, even as she ducks away from his enthusiastic affection.

Determined to win over his crush, Sa-gye ends up following Bom all the way to her campus band. Being in the midst of recruiting, they’re searching for a guitarist in particular — and in a lucky stroke of coincidence, that’s exactly the skillset that the former idol Sa-gye possesses. Good news for the band… or not? Seo Tae-yang — played by Lee Seung-hyeob (Love Next Door) — may shine as bright as the sun he’s named after, but he’s constantly facing pressure from his prestigious family background. As a fellow guitarist, it seems a competitive rivalry is about to spark between him and Sa-gye, if the pointed way he sizes up their newest member is anything to go by. But thankfully, we’re also given a glimpse of the band joyfully rocking out together — and huh, is that a bass guitar I spot Tae-yang strumming? Interesting.

Meanwhile, Sa-gye can’t help but ruminate upon his feelings for Bom, whom he believes to be his destined match. As if to answer his question, Bom’s music box necklace snaps, playing a melody as it falls to the ground — and Sa-gye finds himself instinctively humming along. “How do you know my song?” wonders Bom, gazing curiously up at Sa-gye. As the color palette goes dark, Sa-gye clutches his head, trying to figure out why Bom’s song keeps appearing in his dreams. Hinting at a deeper connection between them, we see Sa-gye swim towards a sinking Bom, before awakening with a start. Just like the “four seasons” of his name, will Sa-gye be able to weather the changing skies with Bom? Or will their past strike a discordant note between them?

Led by PD Kim Sung-yong (My Dearest) with scripts composed by Kim Min-chul, Spring of Youth is slated for a May 6 premiere.
