SUMMARY: Have we met before or do I just dream about you? It sounds like a really cheesy line that would turn a girl off. It’s worse than asking her if heaven is missing an angel. But it’s actually a genuine question! The guy doesn’t know why he keeps dreaming about this girl. Have they ever met before? How could he know such intimate details about someone he’s never met? (O.o)
In “Spring of Youth”, Sa Gye is a vocalist and a guitarist, the frontman for a popular K-pop group. He’s on top of the world. But you know what they say? When you’re at the top, the only place you can go from there is DOWN! Something happened. It doesn’t matter if the incident wasn’t true. It’s been uploaded to social media, and fans have seen it. Almost overnight, he went from being a super sensational K-pop star to having to make a decision for the sake of the other members in the group. What was the decision? Leave the group and enroll in a university as a freshman.
Hey! Life could be a lot worse than attending a university. As soon as he gets to the university, he meets Kim Bom, a gifted musician who composes her own music. Music that she’s sure is her original piece, so she doesn’t know why Sa Gye knows the melody. (O.o) That’s not all he knows. He knows very intimate private details about her, like her white piano that has a bunny rabbit. Sa Gye is not sure either. It’s just that he keeps having these dreams. He wonders if he and Kim Bom knew each other before, although he has no conscious memory of her.
As soon as he gets to the university, Sa Gye also meets Seo Tae-yang, a gifted guitarist and a medical student. Seo Tae-yang has a romantic interest in Kim Bom, but she only thinks of him like a big brother. But her feelings could change. He’s hopeful, or he was hopeful until Sa Gye showed up.
Sa Gye wanted to join a band that was already assembled, but Seo Tae-yang didn’t want him as a member. He challenged Sa Gye to a guitar competition. If he won, he could join the band. If not? Bye-bye! Sa Gye lost the guitar competition. So what! He took the “lemons”, made “tangerines”, and decided to start his own band. Why not? He can’t be a member of his old K-pop group, but who said he couldn’t start a new group at university?
Sa Gye formed a new band, and the members included Kim Bom, an awesome pianist and gifted composer, and guess who else? Seo Tae-yang also joined the band. After all, he is a brilliant guitarist, and no doubt he wanted to stay close to Kim Bom, even though Sa Gye had already drawn her into his circle.
For Sa Gye, meeting Kim Bom, losing a guitar competition to Seo Tae-yang, and getting to start over with his own new band might be the best thing that ever happened to him! How‘s that for positivity? Oh, the joys of being in your spring of youth!
My personal rating is the same as MDL.
“Spring of Youth” has familiar K-drama tropes but unfamiliar new faces. I don’t know much about these young actors, other than their support roles. But hey! They have to spread their wings and fly!
