The bells are ringing and the flags fluttering for tvN’s fantasy romance Head Over Heels, which tells the tale of a young mudang, or Korean shaman, and her endeavor to rescue her unfortunate beloved. Adapted from the webtoon of the same name, the twelve-episode drama will intertwine matters of the heart with the enigmatic threads of spiritual fate.
Taking center stage is Jo Yi-hyun (The Matchmakers) as the bright and vivacious Park Sung-ah. At just eighteen, Sung-ah is a regular high school student by day, and a trendy MZ-generation shaman by night. It seems like 24 hours in a day still aren’t enough for her, but she takes on her daily duties with a bright smile befitting her nickname of a “human talisman.”
She’s joined by Choo Young-woo (The Trauma Code – Heroes on Call) as Bae Gyeon-woo, whose name alludes to the mythological tale of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. Instead of dealing with strings, though, our heroine handles the spirits of the realm invisible to most.
“It’s dangerous,” Sung-ah warns, as Gyeon-woo walks down the shrouded hallway of a traditional hanok. A candle flickers, casting sinister shadows upon our mysterious hero. Rice scatters upon the floor, though we aren’t privy to the message it reveals. “It’s too dangerous,” repeats our shaman, in an ominous murmur. “That… face,” and then the doors open to reveal Gyeon-woo’s chiseled looks. LOL, looks like our fairy has a weakness for handsome boys. Sung-ah can’t tear her gaze away, utterly transfixed by the attractive visitor.
Alas for Sung-ah, her new beau comes with one particularly pertinent dealbreaker. Like it or not, her spiritual powers have her perceiving an uncomfortable truth about Gyeon-woo — he’s fated to die soon. Uh-oh. Talk about a pair of star-crossed lovers! “Just like that, my arduous first love began,” narrates Sung-ah. Then we see the result of her rice divination — it’s arranged in the shape of a heart. Someone’s smitten…
Rounding out our main cast, we have Cha Kang-yoon (Resident Playbook) as Sung-ah’s best friend Pyo Ji-ho. Next, Choo Ja-hyun (While You Were Sleeping) steps into the shoes of the adaptation-exclusive character Yeom-hwa, a shaman who nurses deep scars and a desire for vengeance. Will she guide Sung-ah as a spiritual mentor, or will she direct her grudge towards our young fledglings? Only time will tell.
Helmed by Kim Yong-wan (The Whirlwind) with scripts crafted by Yang Ji-hoon, Head Over Heels is slated to premiere on June 23.
