From gritty period drama to heartfelt slice-of-life, Ryu Seung Ryong is poised to dominate both the screen and the hearts of viewers once again.
First up is the much-anticipated Disney+ original series Low Life, premiering on July 16. Set in 1977, the story follows a group of honest but rough-around-the-edges countryside folks who come together in pursuit of a long-lost treasure ship buried beneath the sea. Ryu transforms into Oh Kwan-seok, a man barely scraping by through petty scams with his nephew. When word spreads of ancient porcelain hidden off the coast of Sinan, he heads to Mokpo, driven by the dream of striking it rich.
RELATED STORY
Swapping his usual comedic flair for gritty charisma, Ryu leads this ensemble piece with intensity, breathing life into a desperate yet endearing character. Expectations are soaring, given his collaboration with director Kang Yoon-sung (The Outlaws, Casino) and Disney+, following its global hit Moving. All eyes are on this powerhouse trio to deliver another success.
Not stopping there, Ryu returns later this year in JTBC’s upcoming drama The Story of Manager Kim Working at a Large Company in His Own House in Seoul (LT) – a title as intriguing as the story itself. Adapted from a hit web novel, the drama follows Kim Nak-soo, a top-tier salesman with 25 years of success behind him. He seemingly has it all: a thriving career, a home in prime Seoul real estate, and a picture-perfect family. But when his world comes crashing down, he’s forced to rediscover who he truly is—outside the polished title and material success.
In this introspective and emotionally resonant role, Ryu is expected to deliver another deeply relatable performance. Much like his acclaimed turn in Moving, where he brought heart to a superhero story, Ryu is once again set to highlight the quiet struggles and triumphs of everyday life.
The Dramara production team shared, “Ryu Seung-ryong is the ideal actor to portray Manager Kim’s emotional highs and lows. We hope his story will resonate with viewers navigating the pressures of modern life.”
With one role diving into a treasure-hunting period tale and the other reflecting the bittersweet realities of adulthood, Ryu Seung-ryong is set for a double strike this year, proving once again why he remains one of Korea’s most versatile and beloved actors.
