Netflix has announced its main cast for upcoming webtoon adaptation The Rat (working title). The thriller mystery stars Ryu Joon-yeol (The 8 Show) and Sol Kyung-gu (Hyper Knife) as an unlikely pair working together to hunt down a rat and reclaim what was once theirs.
Reclusive author Mun-jae (Ryu Joon-yeol) is unable to unlock his cellphone one day, and his friend who did everything for him vanishes as well. He loses all means to prove his identity and learns that a mysterious person who goes by the title “rat” has stolen his name, status, and estate. In the blink of an eye, Mun-jae’s quiet life is thrown into chaos, and in order to return things back to normal, he seeks help from a dubious source.
Three years ago, Mun-jae borrowed money from loan shark No-ja (Sol Kyung-gu) and ran away without paying him. Now, with no one else to turn to, Mun-jae shows up at No-ja’s private detective agency with a request: find out who the rat is. Though it is a strange proposition, it also happens to be the only option No-ja has to find his money again. Thus, the dangerous man who once chased the runaway author must join hands with him to catch the rat and get back what he is owed.
The original webtoon takes inspiration from the Korean folklore about a rat that ate a fingernail and turned into a human. A rather chilling tale where the line between truth and falsehood is blurred, neither leads are honorable people, and as they try to uncover the liar, they get caught in a bigger web of lies along the way.
Directed by PD Kim Hong-sun (Dear Hongrang, The Guest) with scripts written by Lee Jae-gon (A Model Family), Netflix’s The Rat has begun filming and will be released on the streaming site sometime next year.
