It’s always an interesting moment when completely opposed genres are brought together to form a new game. The result is usually something that’s equal parts amusing and alluring, with varying levels of success. Frog Legs, releasing through Steam on May 19, manages to blend two genres you’d never expect, and it does it surprisingly well.
If I told you that a single game took DOOM-esque FPS mechanics, the 3D puzzles of Resident Evil, and then threw them all into a Frogger-themed world (you know, the 2D, top-down, hop-over-the-road-and-avoid-death game first released in 1981), you’d probably think I was mid-fever dream, but that’s the joy of bizarre, yet oddly satisfying, Frog Legs.
Somehow, it just works. As for the music? Chefs kiss, honestly.
Frog Legs is a single-player game designed to be completed in a single sitting of 30 to 40 minutes, blending the three genres of gameplay into one seamless and enjoyable experience. It’s story-driven, with 2D, just-about-3D, and fully 3D moments to keep you ‘ribbeted’. I’m not apologizing for that pun. You can’t make me.
Imagine starting your gameplay experience as a 2D frog just hopping over the traffic, but then, in a tragic accident, one of your merry band of amphibians ends up splattered on the tarmac. You move on, or try to, but the moment haunts you and your group of froggy friends.
You’d think that would be bad enough, but then the past catches up to you and you’re thrown into classic DOOM-type boomer action, complete with the BFG (Big Froggin’ Gun), and now you’re facing certain death in 3D. It’s absolute chaos in the best possible way.
Brought to life in glorious form by solo dev Elliot Dahle, Frog Legs will be available to play through Steam on May 19, and I urge anyone to dive in. Considering it’s a short game, you don’t have to invest too much time into it, and it’s sure to be an almost guaranteed ‘hopping’ good time.
