A new noir series has appeared on the block – called I Am a Sinner (roughly translated) – and an offer has reportedly been made to Park Seo-joon (Gyeongseong Creature 2) to play our dark and troubled hero.
Adding to the plentiful sea of webtoon adaptations as of late, the popular source material for I Am a Sinner was created by webtoonist Lee Moo-ki and is a period piece set in the turbulent 1980s in South Korea. Part 1 was published over 2022-2023, and was then followed by Part 2 in late 2023 until its conclusion earlier this year.
In this drama remake, Park Seo-joon is said to be taking on the role of Park Eon-jin, who of course is suffering from a ~tragic~ past. It’s a classic case of circumstances forcing our anti-hero down a path to the underground world. And once he’s there, there is no turning back. Here, he’s better known as Paeng-yi, which refers to the “spinning top” toy in Korean.
But despite his innocent-sounding nickname, Paeng-yi is a ruthless and crafty maknae of the gang group. As the only survivor in an escalated situation surrounding a gold and silver shop, this gives Paeng-yi access to considerable sums and pave a path into the drug cartel. The story then follows the frenzy that ensues as ambition and betrayals spark war within the gangs.
With production for the drama remake of I Am a Sinner currently in the early stages, details regarding the director and writer, as well as the platform have not yet been announced.
