Overcompensating: The Art of Pretending You Love Women (And Football, Definitely Football)

A24 and Amazon Prime Video are gearing up to drop Overcompensating, a sharp and side-splitting comedy arriving in May 2025. Created, produced, and starring Benito Skinner, the series is executive produced by Skinner, Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin, and Scott King. Inspired by Skinner’s own experiences before coming out, Overcompensating takes a hilariously unfiltered dive into masculinity, identity, and the absurd lengths people go to in order to maintain a facade.

Skinner steps into the cleats of Benny, a college football star blessed with athletic talent, undeniable popularity, and an army of female admirers, including Esther (played by supermodel Kaia Gerber). The only catch? Benny is secretly gay and determined to keep it under wraps. To prove—mostly to himself—that he’s straight, he dials his masculinity up to comically ridiculous levels, masking his true identity behind forced bravado and exaggerated hetero energy. From shotgunning beers with the bros to overusing the word “bro” itself, Benny’s over-the-top antics make for a comedic yet painfully relatable exploration of internalized homophobia.

The trailer wastes no time setting the show’s mix of awkward hilarity and raw honesty. It kicks off with Benny in the bathroom, mentally hyping himself up before sleeping with his girlfriend, Carmen (played by Wally Baram). In a moment of pure secondhand embarrassment, he desperately tries to conjure up thoughts of his handsome classmate Miles (Rish Shah) just to make the encounter possible. Meanwhile, Carmen, blissfully unaware of Benny’s struggle, is more concerned about whether her eyeliner is smudged than the existential crisis playing out next to her.

Adding even more chaos to the mix, pop sensation Charli XCX makes her acting debut in Overcompensating. Playing a heightened version of herself, she injects an extra dose of pop culture madness into the series. In what is s

ure to be a fan-favorite scene, Charli goes full diva on a poor college event planner, snapping: “Do you think I wanna play ‘Boom Clap’ to a f*cking college?”

Benito Skinner, best known for his viral comedy sketches and razor-sharp satire, brings his signature blend of humor and heart to Overcompensating, delivering a refreshingly honest take on masculinity and self-acceptance. With a mix of laugh-out-loud moments, uncomfortable truths, and plenty of cringe-worthy antics, Overcompensating promises to be as hilarious as it is heartfelt. Get ready for the chaos when the series hits Amazon Prime Video this May 2025.
