SUMMARY: It’s a movie that involves movie makers and making a movie. Art often mirrors life. But this quote sums up the storyline. “No one has the right to destroy themselves. The only right we have is to love.”
In “Our Movie”, Lee Je-Ha‘s father was considered a master filmmaker. He became a moviemaker, following in his father’s footsteps. His first film was so successful that people began calling him a genius. Everyone is anxious to know if or when he’ll make his next film. But … it’s been 5 years. A lot has happened to him in 5 years.
In that period of time, Lee Je-Ha almost lost his childhood home because of financial problems, but he was finally able to pay the related debts and move back in. In addition, he got divorced from the woman he loved and considered his muse. She is an actress who is now very successful. He’s in a slump and can’t seem to get his creative juices flowing again. One of his colleagues approached him with an idea. Instead of an original work, why not remake his father’s classic film “Love in White” (Or “White Love”) and update it for the modern era?
Lee Je-Ha doesn’t know why everybody else raves about the movie. For some reason, he thinks it’s “filthy”. Yet he has watched it several times. One night, he watched it in a theater and thought he was all alone. But a young woman had also watched the film and left the theater crying. He had seen this woman before in the front of a convenience store. He gave him a bottle of grape juice. Seeing her a second time a completely unexpected. He would have liked to have talked to her, but she ran away.
Her reaction made him curious. The lady was a young woman, yet she was crying after watching his father’s old classic film. Why can’t he be moved like that? At another time, he met one of the actresses who had starred in the film. She told him that, as a writer, if he ever read the original screenplay, he would think differently and understand the film better.
Lee Je-Ha had never read the screenplay. He was surprised to find it in an old box and even more surprised to learn that the screenplay was written by his mother. Suddenly, he became very interested in “Love in White” and told his colleague to give him 2 months to rewrite an updated storyline for the modern era. He also asked his colleague to get him a consultant because he wanted the plot and dialogue to be realistic and needed to talk to a medical expert on terminal illnesses.
A month passed, and Lee Je-Ha was not progressing with the screenplay. He complained that the advice provided by the consultants was useless. His colleague said that he had found one more consultant, and he was certain that this expert was going to be of great help to him. So he visited the doctor’s office, and the doctor took him to a memorial service.
After paying his respects to the deceased, the doctor took him into the room where the mourners go to eat and drink. The doctor got up from the table and excused himself, but told Lee Je-Ha to wait right there. He said the person he was looking for would come in to speak with him.
Who is “the person he was looking for”? (O.o) Lee Je-Ha was slightly baffled, but he waited there anyway. After a short while, a young woman came in and paid her respects to the deceased. She came into the room and sat at the table where Lee Je-Ha was sitting. It a obvious the young woman was grief-stricken, but the way she was eating the food, she also seemed to be starving.
Lee Je-Ha wasn’t sure what to do, but they ended up walking outside and sitting on a bench. He waited patiently for her to regain her composure. Once she stopped crying, the young woman apologized. Then she said, “I heard that you were looking for me. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lee Da-Eum. I’m a terminally ill patient and I’ll be your consultant.”
Lee Je-Ha and Lee Da-Eum were both at turning points in their lives. Even though Lee Da-Eum was suffering from an incurable disease and did not have long to live, she was determined to achieve her dream of becoming an actress. Therefore, she embraced the opportunity to serve as a consultant for Lee Je-Ha’s next film project. He’s a genius! Who knows? He might even pick her to play a part in the movie and … and … ??? … who knows what else might happen?
Whatever happens, she wants to live the life that she has to the fullest. Without realizing it, Lee Da-eum’s enthusiasm and energy for life revived Lee Je-ha’s passion for filmmaking and storytelling. She became his new muse, his inspiration. Even though he knew he would not have much time to be with her, he fell in love with her anyway. The line from his father’s old movie took on a brand new meaning for him. “The only right we have is to love.”
My personal rating is the same as IMDb.
