If you haven’t heard, Oni Press is bringing Adventure Time back, in the form of a new ongoing monthly comic book. It’s the first regular AT series since Boom stopped publishing theirs seven years ago. The fun times continue next month and to mark the occasion, Oni has concocted quite the gommick: five covers that, when assembled, display an infinite gathering of the series’ cast of characters. Watch this GIF and be mesmerized. It’s the kind of thing that makes Ooo worthy of its name.
Here is what the covers look like when NOT endlessly animated. They will be variant covers of the first five issues, drawn by artists Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb.
Adventure Time #1 will be written and drawn entirely by cartoonist / animator Nick Winn and former Adventure Time writer/storyboard artist Derek Ballard. “Adventure Time was such a huge part of me growing up,” says Winn. “Not only was it hilarious, but it had such an emotional intelligence that very few shows could pull off back then. Being able to revisit the land of Ooo through Oni Press has really been such a joy and a challenge to build something new while still keeping the energy and charm the show cast on me in middle school!”
Future issues will feature stories and art by 2024 Eisner Award winner Caroline Cash (“PeePee PooPoo”), Asia Simone (“Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Wreck and Roll”), Jorge Monlongo (“Over the Garden Wall: Hallow Town”); Brenda Hicke (“My Little Pony”), and, at some point, Derek Ballard again.
Oni also gave us a sneak peek at Issue 1: it’s wordless, so you’ll have to guess what everyone’s saying, but it shows off Winn’s artwork nicely. It’s Finn and Jake doing battle against a gelatinous…well, it’s not cube-shaped, probably for legal reasons, but it serves the same function.
Adventure Time #1 will go on sale April 9. Schmazow!
