Even if I attempted with good intention and focus to catch up on the past year plus I have been away from blogging, I could not even begin to scratch the surface of everything I missed in K-poplandia! But I suppose if one thing was going to bring me out of fangirl semi-retirement, it was going to be my beloved and sorely missed GOT7. With Jay B and Jinyoung freshly discharged from their military duties, the men of G7 are wasting no time and are scheduled to make a comeback on January 20, 2025, with a new EP entitled, Winter Heptagon. To say I am excited is an understatement.
So what exactly is a “winter heptagon?” Well, inasmuch as I am quite positive that the naming of their comeback EP was a concerted group effort, I cannot help but think that our well-read, enigmatic leader, Jay B, had some say in how this was going to play out. A heptagon, geometrically speaking, is a 7-sided object. Hmmm…seven sides, seven members, GOT7. That tracks. But, here’s the twist. In astronomy, there is actually something that is known as the “Winter Hexagon.” Let’s unpack.
The Winter Hexagon (also known as The Winter Circle), is a group of some of the brightest stars found in the Northern Hemisphere’s winter sky. As noted in the image above, the Winter Hexagon is comprised of Capella (from Auriga the Charioteer constellation), Aldebaran (from Taurus the Bull constellation), Rigel (from Orion the Hunter constellation), Sirius (from Canis Major the Greater Dog constellation), Procyon (from Canis Minor the Lesser Dog constellation), and Pollux (from Gemini the Twins constellation). Adding the bright and shining Betelgeuse which sits center in the hexagon (also from Orion the Hunter constellation), creates the Winter Triangle within the hexagon and, if you stretch your imagination (but not by much) you can see that we have what clearly looks like a G7 formation in this asterism.
I’m shook.
It is not surprising that the release of Winter Heptagon is happening shortly after the start of winter and that the concept behind the title comes from an astronomical display of seven bright stars in the winter sky. I mean….that is very well thought out, and seriously cool, just like the seven stars of GOT7.
