As a girl growing up in the modern world, I, like many others, read Jane Austen novels during my formative years. At the time, these novels provided an impossibly romantic view of the world, inspiring me to seek out such romance in my future dating life. It’s safe to say that the world is not (and probably never really has been) as it was in Austen’s writing, but would I go as far as to say she wrecked my life?
I mean, honestly? For a little while, probably, but that’s not the point of this story.
Laura Piani’s directorial debut rom-com Jane Austen Wrecked My Life will be bursting onto the big screen in the US on May 30. UK residents will have to wait a little while longer, with the movie premiering for Brits a little over a month later on June 13.
For anyone who has ever read an Austen novel and then ended up disappointed by their own mediocre experiences with romance, it seems to be the perfect feel-good movie to boost the spirits.
Jane Austen Wrecked My Life centers around Agathe, an insecure would-be novelist with the dream of finding her own Austen-esque romance. But, she’s not likely to find it stuck in Paris, working at British bookshop Shakespeare & Co. After her close friend sends in her work for consideration, Agathe is accepted into the Jane Austen Writers’ Residency and travels to England for the opportunity.
Where she swiftly enters into a will-they-won’t-they entanglement with Jane Austen’s descendant, who sadly does not share his ancestor’s idealistic view of romance. Because nothing in life ever comes easily, does it?
According to director and screenwriter Laura Piani, this is not a ‘saved by the man’ type of romance tale, which is honestly a little relieving. Instead, she states that Agathe will eventually fall in love with ‘the right man’, but only after figuring out how to stand on her own two feet as the strong, independent woman (and writer) she was always destined to be.
