No sooner does IDW announce a reprint omnibus of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, Archie Comics’ adaption of the TV show Turtles (which were in turn adaptions from a comic book)…than NECA reveals these cool-looking TMNT figures based on that comic, faithfully reproducing the rubbery Ken Mitchroney art in 3D.
These figures actually come from a specific issue: Number 7, the one where the Turtles were transported to a wrestling tournament in space, and were forced to fight against their will by Stump, literally a talking tree. There they faced opponents Leatherhead, a giant dog named Cryin’ Houn’, and weirdly enough, Ace Duck, who was a muscle-bound superhero in this world and not a TV show character.
Should I also mention that the way the Turtles were kidnapped was getting swallowed by a giant floating cow head? And that the cow head (whose name was Cudley) became a recurring element for the next few issues, confusing everyone who picked up the crossover Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet Archie (that is how they got into Riverdale, Cudley spit them out there)? TMNT Adventures was a weird book.
You can’t get Cudley, but you can get the TMNT the way they were dressed in Issue 7, along with Leatherhead and even Cryin’ Houn’, who has to be one of the most obscure TMNT characters to get his own figure. Cryin’ Houn’ spent the entire wrestling match trying to say his own name, but he proved to be quite formidable, at least until the Turtles could recover their weapons.
The figures are crafted well, but craftsmanship doesn’t come cheap. The TMNT are sold as a gang of four at a price of $149.99. Leatherhead is $34.99 and Cryin’ Houn’ is $39.99. Getting them all reduces the overall cost by a bit, but it’s still $224.97. They are all available at NECA’s website now.
