Namgoong Min and Jeon Yeo-bin seek solace in Our Movie

A melancholy trailer offers a first snapshot of the upcoming SBS melo-romance Our Movie, following the craft of a filmmaker and the terminally-ill actress immortalized through his lens. With inevitable deadlines on the horizon, this twelve-episode drama tells the tale of a love that cannot be postponed till tomorrow.

Namgoong Min (My Dearest) takes the reins as the film director Lee Je-ha who was once lauded in his rookie days for his promising potential. Alas, he subsequently fell into a slump, drifting aimlessly as if having lost his way. Then Je-ha crosses paths with the aspiring actress Lee Da-eum. Played by Jeon Yeo-bin (A Time Called You), Da-eum knows her days are numbered. With that, Je-ha resolves to create a movie about terminal illness, with an actual patient as his protagonist.

The teaser opens with Je-ha walking into the frame of a VHS camcorder. As he gradually comes into focus, the camera is abruptly lowered, as if caught off guard. Behind the lens is Da-eum, who sheepishly scoots closer to the convenience store table. Perhaps the role reversal has Da-eum feeling awkward; after all, she’s usually on the other side of the camera. All the while, Je-ha gazes pensively, not speaking a word into the silent night air.

The scene fades out, and morning has Da-eum filming birds in flight. “Does love disappear upon one’s death?” muses Da-eum. “If the love is true, we have to believe that it will last forever, even if one dies.” A romantic, almost idealistic view, though the mellow tone of Da-eum’s voice suggests she believes in it for the hope it affords her. But Je-ha holds a different opinion. “Even love that seems eternal ultimately fades away.” Against the picturesque scenery, Je-ha’s sombre disposition is all the more stark.

On another day, our pair take a stroll through a park, leading to a candid moment. “It’s a secret, but I’m making this movie because I don’t know all that well,” admits Je-ha, “what it means to love.” To that, Da-eum smiles gently, in a light chuckle. A sense of empathy, maybe, or a moment of camaraderie through a shared understanding. As they craft their film together, one reel at a time, perhaps they will become each other’s inspiration — to learn, to love, and to live.

Directed by PD Lee Jung-heum (Inspector Koo) with scripts penned by Han Ga-eun and Kang Kyung-min, Our Movie is slated to premiere on June 13.
