SUMMARY: In an instant, everything in life can be taken away from you. Can you ever live life to the fullest again, especially when you have an annoying brother?
In “My Annoying Brother”, Doo-Young has the world at his feet. Everything was going great for him. He’s about to take the gold medal for judo. He was at the top of his game, and then he wasn’t. It only took one flip from his opponent, and when he landed on the ground, he hit the back of his head, damaging the optic nerve. Doo-Young looked in the direction of his coach, but he couldn’t see a thing. He lost his eyesight, and there was no chance of his being able to see again. He began living alone in his family’s home, away from the rest of the world. Both of his parents passed away when he was 18 years old. He had a half-brother, but they had not spoken to each other in years.
Doo-Young couldn’t physically see his brother, but even if he could, he didn’t want to see him. He didn’t need his annoying brother, nor did he want him in his miserable life. It was better to be depressed all by himself. But his half-brother, Doo-Sik, who is in prison serving time for scamming people, had other ideas. He read in the paper that his little brother had lost his eyesight. He requested an interview with the parole board and asked if they would release him so that he could take care of his blind brother.
He played the sympathy and compassion card, and it worked like a charm! They let him out of prison. When he showed up at the family home, he jumped over the wall. Doo-Young had locked the gate because he didn’t want any visitors. He wanted to live in a dark and dreary world all alone. He had nothing. EVERYTHING had been taken away from him. But Doo-Sik figured that surely he at least had money. After all, he was probably earning money when he was a top judo athlete. Plus, the parents probably left him some money.
This was Doo-Sik’s true colors. He didn’t want to get out of jail to take care of his brother. He wanted freedom, and his brother’s blindness was the excuse he needed to get out. But then he saw the condition Doo-Young was living in. Doo-Young told him to get out! He said he was doing just fine, didn’t need his help, and then passed out. Doo-Sik rushed him to the hospital and found out his brother was suffering from malnutrition. The situation was worse than he realized. Yes, at first, he only came home for selfish reasons. He and his brother had drifted apart after so many years of separation.
Doo-Young had legitimate reasons for being angry with Doo-Sik. His big brother left the house one day and never came back. Doo-Young waited and waited, and finally, when their parents died, he gave up waiting. He accepted that he was all alone in the world. But now Doo-Sik has come back home, and he sees no reason to welcome him back. The bridges of brotherhood were burned down. But … maybe … perhaps together they can build new bridges.
However, Doo-Sik would have to be the one to start building. After all, he was the one who left with no explanation and caused the hurt and pain. Doo-Sik got his release from prison on the condition that he take care of Doo-Young for one (1) year. Will that be enough time to repair the damage to their relationship? Will their life story have a fairy tale ending?
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.
What do you get when you cast two of South Korea’s best male actors in a movie together? GOLD! Although the film was released in 2016, it was just added to the Viki database for the US audience. I have nothing but HIGH PRAISE for the two male leads in “My Annoying Brother”. They weren’t annoying at all. This film gets an A+++ for character development and for a heartwarming and very touching story.
