Intrigue and intellect unearth a cold case with all its history in the upcoming crime thriller Nine Puzzles, a Disney+ original starring Kim Da-mi (Our Beloved Summer) as a former murder suspect and current detective. The question is, which side of the law does she truly stand on?
The teaser opens with an eerie shot of Yoon Yi-na (Kim Da-mi) lying in a bloodstained chalk outline. But she’s far from being the murder victim — on the contrary, she’s the sole witness. A decade ago, Yi-na’s uncle was murdered, depriving her of the only family member who raised her like his own child. “Puzzle,” Yi-na muses thoughtfully, a jigsaw piece in her hand. “Signature. The only traces of the culprit.” After all this time, Yi-na has grown up into a criminal profiler with six years of experience under her belt. No matter the circumstances, Yi-na can swiftly pinpoint culprits’ motives with razor-sharp accuracy — almost as if she’s killed someone before.
“I still think Yoon Yi-na is the most likely suspect,” declares the detective Kim Han-saem, played by Sohn Seok-gu (Heavenly Ever After). Having first crossed paths with Yi-na ten years ago at the scene of her uncle’s death, amidst the wailing of ambulance sirens, Han-saem’s suspicions have not abated since. Now that they’ve met again as colleagues, Han-saem can’t help but be reminded of the past all over again. “Am I this case’s culprit?” asks Yi-na, in a seemingly guileless voice.
The flash of a medical examiner’s camera illuminates a corpse, while the ink of a red marker bisects a sketched figure’s neck. Elsewhere, manicured fingers — not Yi-na’s, then — thumb through photos of a murdered man. Shrouded by nightfall, a red suitcase is dragged across the forest floor; in the light of day, the barrel of a shotgun takes aim from between tall reeds that obscure its shooter. Punctuating this montage are chyrons that offer a few hints to the nature of this mystery: lost memories, suspicious puzzles, and murders that begin anew.
Ever the enigma, Yi-na seemingly skirts the line between lawful and lawless. Does she truly have a criminal history to hide, or is all her cryptic commentary simply misdirection in service of a larger purpose? “What should I do,” wonders Yi-na, the ghost of an innocent smile playing upon her lips, “for you to catch me?”
Helmed by PD Yoon Jong-bin (Narco-Saints) with scripts by Lee Eun-mi (Navillera, Tunnel), Nine Puzzles will premiere with a six-episode drop on May 21. Subsequently, three episodes will be released on May 28, with a final two episodes to wrap up the show’s run on June 4.
