SUMMARY: A vacation to go mountain biking turns into a nightmare. The group of friends can’t see their attacker. Will anyone survive? If only they had seen the sign.
In “Mount Chiak”, when Min-Joon gets on his bike it’s as if they are ONE and can’t be separated. Mountain biking is an exhilarating sport but not for the faint of heart. Min-Joon is bold, brave, and daring. So unafraid that he ignores the story about the grizzly unsolved murders on Mount Chiak. A group of victims were found, and each person was cut into 18 pieces. But there was no weapon or any kind of evidence. But you know how people are. They think: ‘That happened to them, But it won’t happen to me!’
Hyun-Jin is Min-Joon’s cousin and they are going to stay at her old home located in the woods on Mount Chiak, with three more friends: Yang-Bae, and a couple, Soo-A and Yi-Sak. Hyun-Jin’s father went missing when she was a little girl and she has not dared to return. She finally decided to go there with Min-Joon and his friends and face her fears.
As soon as she got there she looked up in the sky and it was almost like she was in a trance. But when Min-Joon, asked her if she was OK, she acted like everything was normal and he was the one acting strange. That was the first odd thing he noticed about her behavior and it wasn’t going to be the last.
Riding a bike on a Mount Chiak trail was quite the challenge. Yang-Bae came along as the videographer. He and Min-Joon planned to upload a video of their mountain biking adventure for sports enthusiasts and hopefully make some money! Soo-A and Yi-Sak came along because they were both mountain bikers and lovers who didn’t want to be separated from each other.
Oh! One last thing. When they were driving to the old home, through the woods, there was a sign on the ground but nobody saw it. It said something about uuhh … “Stay Out!, Restricted Area, Dept of Defense”. Something like that! It wasn’t important enough to ruin their mountain biking adventure.
Main Characters:
My personal rating is the same as Letterboxd.
“Mount Chiak” is another alien abduction movie. Uuuhhh … we think. It could be aliens. Or … it could be a government experiment gone really bad. Or … it could be the government trying to cover up that there are aliens and that they tried to interact with them and … the close encounter didn’t go very well. Or … ??? … the possible explanations and scenarios can go on and on and on.
Mount Chiak is a real mountain, a part of the Taebaek mountain range and is situated in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The Chiaksan National Park was established in 1984, and it is a great destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. There were complaints that the film could potentially hurt the image of the mountain and the city itself. But they got things straightened out. Mount Chiak does not have a designated mountain biking trail which is why – in the story – a skilled biker like Min-Joon, thought it would be a challenge.
Mountain biking is very popular in South Korea and there are a variety of trails and terrains for bikers with different skill levels, i.e. beginners to advanced. Some of the trails have interesting stories or legends associated with them. But none of them are spooky or scary and about unsolved murders. The writers creatively combined an innocent fun mountain biking adventure with unsolved murders, a missing person, a child – now adult, still suffering from a trauma, and what happens when people don’t SEE A WARNING SIGN!
