Shuten Order, due out this fall, looks to be one of the wildest games publisher Spike Chunsoft has been involved with (and they’ve put out some wiiiiild games). It looks on the surface to be a visual novel or JRPG, but it’s also a detective mystery, a stealth action horror game and even a dating sim. And what it ends up being depends on how you play.
The backstory of Shuten Order is that in the future, a religious cult emerges who calls itself the game’s title. Eventually the cult catches on enough to create its own nation state, called Shuten. The story gets weirder from there as its founder is assassinated, resurrected in a different body with amnesia, and instructed by two angels (who may not actually be angels) that he has four days to sniff out his murderer or the world will end. There are five suspects to investigate: the five ministers who control the Shuten Order’s government. Depending on who you go after, the gameplay style will immediately change to one of five genres.
It looks like every week, Spike Chunsoft will be releasing a new short video introducing one major character from the Shuten Order world. Today it’s Yugen Ushitora, voiced by Yuki Ono, who’s the Minister of Health and the director of Shuten General Hospital, which he controls. Spike offers a few more details: “Known as the ‘Gatekeeper to the Afterlife’ because of his proven medical skills. He appears to be hearty and compassionate, but pathologically meticulous. He loves his younger sister.”
Last week Spike uploaded a different short video all about Kishiru Inugami, the Minister of Justice. Taking his path will turn Shuten Order into a detective mystery game, while choosing to pursue Yugen will make it a puzzle game in a 3D maze.
Shuten Order is a multi-genre adventure game produced through a collaboration between DMM GAMES and Tookyo Games, led by Danganropa’s Kazutaka Kodaka (yeah, of course he’s involved). The game will release digitally for Steam and Switch September 5; preorders are now open.
