Limited Run To Reprint Doom In A Box That Runs Doom

One of the biggest cliches in all of hackerdom is “Can it run Doom?” No matter how old or new, no matter how obscure or common, the first thing anyone will try to do once they gain access to a new machine is attempt to port the iconic 3D boomer shooter to it. When Nintendo came out with that “Alarmo” clock earlier this year, it took less than a week for someone to figure out how to run Doom on it, even though its sole controls are a dial.

Limited Run just announced a new reprint of Doom (and Doom II!) and they’ve proven they get it. The CDs inside don’t just run Doom, the box they come in runs it as well. The Will It Run Edition features Doom-capable packaging. A monitor and USB ports are built into the sides, and if you connect a controller, the box will run Doom! Inside you’ll also find a replica of the round Cacodemon that has a small monitor in its face. Guess what it does — it runs Doom too! Everything runs Doom, and the whole package can be yours for six hundred and sixty-six dollars.

But you may not have that cursed amount of money to throw around. Limited Run has also announced smaller-scale versions of the same release, which are cheaper but, you know, don’t come in Doom-capable boxes. The Big Box edition has the full soundtrack on cassette tape (with a slipcase cover), a trading card pack with five collectible DOOM trading cards, and Doom I and II.

Finally, for those who don’t care about all that and want JUST the games in physical form, they can get that too. Doom I and II is available as just the vanilla release for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S for just $30. The deluxe editions are for those systems too, plus PC via Steam (comes with a code instead of physical media). All this Doominess will become available starting April 18, and preorders will be open through May 18.
