MBC has dropped the first teaser for upcoming medical drama Mary Kills People, a remake of the Canadian black comedy series of the same name. The show stars Lee Bo-young (Hide) as the titular Mary who runs an illegal euthanasia clinic and Lee Min-ki (Face Me) as the detective hot on her trail.
The teaser opens with Woo So-jung (Lee Bo-young) holding a scalpel and then preparing a syringe with a sedative which she then injects into a glass of champagne. The text on screen calls her a doctor, but So-jung is no ordinary medical professional. She hands the lethal flute to a couple on a couch and informs them about its contents.
Rather than cure people, So-jung helps her patients stop experiencing pain in the most literal sense. It only takes a few seconds, and we see a series of individuals who come to So-jung, seeking her unsanctioned services.
Along with her fellow doctor Kang Ki-young (Queen of Divorce), the two of them lead those hoping to end their suffering whenever and wherever that may be. An older lady on a beach or a man spending his final moments in a luxurious room, their ends are all the same in the hands of So-jung.
To some, So-jung is a savior, but to others, she is nothing more than a killer. As the teaser highlights her two faces — an anxious looking doctor in a gown as well as a gun-wielding woman pushed to the edge — who exactly is the true So-jung? Inside a confessional, a priest calls her Mary, but So-jung disowns the name and walks out.
Directed by PD Park Joon-woo (Crash, Taxi Driver) with scripts penned by Lee Soo-ah (Inseparable Bros, Unemployed Romance), MBC’s Mary Kills People is slated for twelve episodes and premieres August 1 in the Friday-Saturday slot.
