In a country that strictly prohibits civilian-held firearms, what will happen when an anonymous mastermind distributes guns to people’s doorsteps? Not to be confused with the Disney+ drama Unmasked, which shares the same Korean title, Netflix’s Trigger stars Kim Nam-gil (Karma) as the police officer tracking these mysterious deliveries.
“Everyone harbors a trigger in their hearts,” muses Gil Hae-yeon (Head Over Heels), while the camera pans across unassuming delivery boxes lining residential hallways. Brief glimpses of Park Yoon-ho (Our Unknown Seoul) and Woo Ji-hyun (Gyeongseong Creature) flash by, as if suggesting they’ll soon be pushed to their breaking points. Or perhaps they’ll wind up in the line of fire? Someone writes a letter, then presses down with such force that the pencil lead breaks, punctuated by the sound of gunshots.
Enter Lee Do (Kim Nam-gil), a police officer with a burning sense of justice. While investigating an apartment, Do discovers a hidden space, from which countless bullets spill out and clatter to the floor. “In all your life, have you ever seen something like this?” Perhaps Do’s experience as a former military sniper may come in handy while pursuing the origins of such illicit ammunition.
As senseless violence and motiveless murders grow rampant across the country, unidentifiable parcels continue to be delivered all over the peninsula. Concealed within are various types of guns, essentially arming civilians for free. The world has morphed into one where conflict itself is profitable. As justice systems and law enforcement scramble to reinstate order, chaos breaks out alongside bullet frenzies.
“Aren’t you curious what Korea would be like if everyone owned a gun?” smirks Kim Young-kwang (Evilive) as the weapons broker Moon Baek, his smug grin suggesting he has far more nefarious tricks up his sleeve. Wielding his own state-sanctioned gun, Do takes aim at an unseen target, ready to fire in the name of justice.
Directed by filmmaker Kwon Oh-seung (Midnight) and Kim Jae-hoon, with scripts penned by the former, Trigger is slated for a July 25 release.
