Just like its title suggests, a flurry of action is on its way in TVING’s upcoming crime-action Shark – The Storm. Based on a webtoon, this adaptation is a sequel to the film Shark – The Beginning, which chronicled our hero’s stint in prison after an impulsive crime.
That’s where we catch up with Kim Min-seok (Mr. Plankton) as Cha Woo-sol, the aforementioned hero. In prison, he’d met the former MMA champion Jung Do-hyun — played by Wie Ha-joon (Squid Game 2) — who taught Woo-sol how to fight. After a brief glimpse of Woo-sol’s rigorous training regimen, Do-hyun offers a word of advice. Since Woo-sol defeated the notorious Bae Seok-chan, who has a reputation amongst the gangster circles, he’s sure to draw unwanted attention.
As expected, that’s exactly what happens upon Woo-sol’s release from prison. Although Woo-sol resolves to turn over a new leaf and embark on a new path as an MMA fighter, things don’t go quite as planned. Before long, Woo-sol draws the attention of the underground fighter Hyun Woo-yong, played by a smirking Lee Hyun-wook (The Queen Who Crowns). Hold up, is that a glow-in-the-dark tattoo?
In any case, Woo-yong is downright brutal in the ring, decimating his opponent with a roundhouse kick and refusing to stop even after his opponent is down. Oof, that sounded like the crunch of a broken bone. “So, you’re Cha Woo-sol?” drawls Woo-yong. “Let’s have you join a match.” That’s enough to reignite Woo-sol’s fighting spirit, and a montage of Woo-sol’s altercations ensue. But it’s abruptly interrupted by a shot of Woo-sol in a straitjacket, his mouth agape with shock. Opposite him stands a smug Woo-yong, flanked by two of Woo-sol’s friends similarly in straitjackets. “Who do you trust more between these two?” asks Woo-yong, as if subjecting Woo-sol to a cruel test.
It’s no surprise, then, that a fight between Woo-sol and Woo-yong ensues. But Woo-sol is no match for the vicious Woo-yong, who sends broken glass raining down on a bloodstained Woo-sol. In another fight, Woo-sol flinches away from the sudden swing of Woo-yong’s arm — except Woo-yong’s hand stops inches from Woo-sol’s face, as if to rub salt in his wounds. “Did I startle you?” mocks Woo-yong patronizingly.
To raise the stakes, surrounding gangs soon get drawn into the tussle, facing off against one another. Even so, that’s not enough for our resident villain. “It’s no fun for me, Woo-sol,” croons Woo-yong, squeezing Woo-sol’s face like a plaything. For Woo-yong, whom we see cackling and clapping while he spectates a fight, entertainment is everything — especially if it comes at others’ expense. But Woo-sol is no pushover, and he soon sends Woo-yong crashing through glass tiles. As it turns out, Woo-sol is equally capable of violent ferocity — it seems Woo-yong may have finally met his match.
Directed by Kim Gun with scripts by Min-ji, Shark – The Storm will commence its first match on May 15.
