Kim Min-ha’s last week with Gong Myung in Way Back Love

Grim reaper Gong Myung (Lovers of the Red Sky) has come to pay a visit in the latest promos for TVING’s new fantasy Way Back Love, knocking at the door of his first love Kim Min-ha (Light Shop) and making my eyes leak with the misfortune that befell our pair.

Opening the teaser in flashback, we return once again to when our two leads were high school students, while the now adult Jung Hee-wan (Kim Min-ha) reflects on what happened in voiceover. Hee-wan hadn’t intended any harm. It was just supposed to be a chaotic, but innocently fun April Fool’s joke by swapping name tags with Kim Ram-woo (Gong Myung). The tired teachers had even made a workaround by addressing them each as “The so-called Jung Hee-wan who is really Kim Ram-woo,” and “The self-proclaimed Kim Ram-woo who is really Jung Hee-wan.”

However, these events somehow led up to Ram-woo’s tragic accident and Hee-wan placed the heavy blame on herself. She has since been trapped deep in that despair, lamenting, “If I hadn’t liked Ram-woo… If we hadn’t become friends… If we hadn’t done that dumb name switch… At that time, if I hadn’t sent Ram-woo to go by himself… If we hadn’t swapped names…”

Fast forward to four years later, when our grim reaper Ram-woo appears at a despondent Hee-wan’s door. He’s here to deliver the important message that she has one week left to live and to help Hee-wan make the most of her short remaining time. But now she’s crying and he’s crying (and I’m crying) as she confesses that she can’t forgive herself, while Ram-woo reassures her that he doesn’t hate her and that he came because he missed her.

We’re then taken through Hee-wan’s bucket list of last things to do and the teaser then closes on her heartbreakingly ironic realization that, “Because you’re here in front of my eyes like this, moment by moment, I keep expecting you to be actually alive and I feel pathetic for wishing it. I finally feel like time is moving for me. While being with you, for the first time in a long time, I have started to not want the day to end.”

Production for the novel adaptation has PD Kim Hye-young (Unicorn, Be Melodramatic) and PD Choi Hana at the helm, along with scripts co-penned by Song Hyun-joo and Jang In-jung. TVING’s Way Back Love first premiered at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival and will now be releasing for the wider audience on this coming April 3.
