[Kdrama] ‘Girls’ Generation 1979’ ~ 1-8 END review/impression/opinion ~

AdminOctober 6, 2017

A cute little drama that can bring out from deepest parts of your soul not only fluffy emotions but also complicated and complex ones that can create an inner struggle even as a viewer.

Girl’s Generation 1979 was an interesting approach to the life of girls and women from 1979. As the title says, the drama did focus on the female characters which was a much needed theme from my and many others’ point of view. As we all know, females aren’t showcased that well in dramas, especially in Korean dramas, which is sad.  I saw their happiest moments, their struggles, their anger and all of their emotions and feelings.

The friendships of the characters or just the normal daily conversations were things I really loved about Girl’s Generation 1979. More than that, the way the writer handled the female characters was probably the best out of the dramas I’ve seen this year.

For starters, Jung Hee was and will probably forever be a female character I like. First of all, she was bold, but not stupidity bold. A witty girl with a sense of justice however she always did think about certain situations. As for her problems with her father, Jung Hee wasn’t the normal “I need daddy’s attention”. To a point, she disliked him and his favouritism towards her brother. In spite of that, Jung Hee was more of the ‘I don’t have to prove, I know I am great and you just have to admit it’ type of girl. I never saw Jung Hee wanting obtain her father’s approval, she knew her own worth and because she knew it, the mighty girl wanted to be treated like her brother…or maybe I should say she wanted to be treated as a human being.

I can say that I was a bit displeased with the way the writer handled Jung Hee’s feelings for Dong Moon. I felt that the transition from Jin was somehow fast. I did like the idea where she started having feeling for Dong Moon after she got to know him but personally I wanted to have something more subtle.

On the other hand, I found Dong Moon to be quite coy. He was bold as Jung Hee and always spoke up but never crossed any lines. He made his feelings, be it bad or good, known to the receiver. In contrast with Dong Moon and even Young Choon, even though I find Jin to be an agreeable presence in the show, he was always a step behind these two.

Hye Joo was another female character well made, personality wise, but at the same time, I found her boring. The parts with Young Choon and Hye Joo were too dramatic for me and I even skipped their scenes at times.

Something which I found interesting is that I didn’t have any characters to dislike. I did have certain ones which were despicable to some extent however this drama managed to illustrate life. Not many dramas or writers create a world where we, as viewers, can understand all the characters. Yes, the attitude or the actions of some made me angry at times, but I also understood them. Yet, that doesn’t mean that what they did or say could be forgiven.

In the end, Girls’ Generation 1979 was a really nice watch and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
