Kaiju No. 8 stomps into theaters in just nine days! For those wondering if it’d be sub-only, the answer is nope…a trailer for the English dub version appeared today.
These days anime films are either original movies or omnibus films that repackage TV episodes. Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is sort of both those things….it’s a big-screen re-edit of the first TV season, but it also contains the debut of a new episode, Hoshina’s Day Off.
In a world where kaiju are constantly emerging and causing chaos, civilization’s most vital organization are the members of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. It’s Kafka Hibino’s biggest dream to join the force, but he’s failed every entry test he’s taken. He just doesn’t have the physical chops, until that fateful day he runs into a lone Kaiju — who merges with his body. Now he has the moves to ace the test and become the AKDF’s most valuable member — unless they learn his secret.
Here’s what Hoshina’s Day Off is like: “A day off… a rare day of peace for the Defense Force. After spending so long training, Reno has forgotten what he’s supposed to do with free time. He sees that Hoshina is up to something with his own day off, and decides to go on a mission to tail him with Iharu! But then things go in an unexpected direction…”
The first season of Kaiju No. 8 was animated by Production I.G (PSYCHO-PASS; GHOST IN THE SHELL), with artwork and design supervision by Studio Khara, and nothing’s changed about that. Mission Recon will be released April 13 and screen for three days. All episodes of Season One are currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, minus Hoshina’s Day Off. A sequel season was announced last July and is now in production.
