Did you have a mom, or maybe a grandma, with a button jar? MiataNonna always had this small item tucked in her sewing basket. It was filled with an eclectic collection of buttons — small, large, wooden, metal, plastic, brightly-colored, classically elegant. As a child, I often poured out the contents of the jar, sifting through the varied pieces and picking my favorites. Now, as I listen through a collection of new music drops, I often feel that same delight — exploring songs of all “shapes and sizes” and selecting my favorites to share. My ‘treasures’ today are all unique and beautiful! New solos from BeomGyu of TXT and DaeSung of Big Bang, plus a couple great band tracks, and a fun boy-group bop, are all queued up! Ready to hit play?!
I always look forward to solo songs from K-pop group members! It allows them a moment in the spotlight to flex their vocals and share their preferred musical genre. BeomGyu’s ‘Panic’ is a introspective rock-ballad that highlights his smooth, warm voice. And while the lyrics may be a bit on the heavier side, there’s a hopeful sound to the music that wins out in the end.
“Quirky” and “cozy” are the best words to describe Lucy’s newest title track, off their recent comeback album WAJANGCHANG. A whole song about being sleepy and just wanting to go back to bed?! I think I’ve just found my own personal OST! The upbeat music continues to emphasize the fun signature sound of this Indie band. I also loved the teddy-bear drummer cameo — a sweet nod to their percussionist, who’s currently serving in the military.
With their bright and upbeat energy, the bops always call to me! ’Unfreeze’ is the perfect definition of a bop with its lively rhythm and youthful exuberance. I was pulled in by the playful mix of harmonies and chants in the chorus, but the entire song gets me up and dancing whenever it queues up on my playlist shuffle!
I shared the title track from Dragon Pony’s first comeback, last month, and I’m featuring them again in today’s post, with this B-side ballad. Time slows and a feeling of reflection accompanies the mellow, melancholy sound of ‘Never’. It’s unhurried, yet certain, in the flow of the melody and the raw exposition of the lyrics. This song serves as a soothing balm, and offers closure to help move on . . .
I have been loving all the new solo albums being released by Big Bang members, and DaeSung’s recent comeback is no exception! His power vocals always pack a punch and they pair perfectly with the sweeping, inspirational sound in his pop-rock, title-track ‘Universe’. I enjoyed quite a few of his b-sides as well and definitely recommend checking out the full album here. (Maybe T.O.P will share some new music next?! Keeping the hope alive!)
Kwon EunBi dropped new single, and I am here for the mysterious and sultry Latin vibe that is woven throughout ‘Hello Stranger’! From the music, to the styling, to the choreo, her concept is cohesive and beautifully executed. If you feel the pull to dance little salsa rhythm when this song comes on, you’re not alone!
Hope you enjoyed this week’s shiny collection of favorites!
Until the next playlist,
화이팅!
