The Divorce Insurance Episodes 7 and 8 Highlights

“Since when has life ever gone as planned?”

Ki-jun’s proposal for Han-deul to stay at his house wasn’t about living together but swapping places. (What were we thinking?) Neither has good memories of their places. So, it might be a pleasant change to switch places. At first, Ki-jun suggests they switch places until one of them sells their place. But Han-deul feels reluctant about it, so Ki-jun alters it to a one-month stay.

As they try to adapt to the new environments, Ki-jun realizes how empty Han-deul’s life was. Her trashy ex-husband took everything and barely left anything, while causing some damage on top of that. Likewise, Han-deul experiences living in a fully furnished house and getting a good night’s sleep for the first time in a while.

There is also a charged moment when Han-deul mistakes Ki-jun for a thief and beats him up when he comes to get his watch, only for him to hold her to make her recognize him, and a sweet moment when Ki-jun drops by early in the morning to turn off the alarm as it only stops ringing when he answers a posed question, while also bringing Han-deul’s toaster for her.

Carpooling to work, Han-deul and Ki-jun are greeted by Na-rae, who is curious about their relationship. (Can’t Na-rae stop meddling in Ki-jun’s life and focus on her love life instead?) Prompted to define their relationship, Ki-jun calls it a gray zone since they are somewhere between lovers and friends, while leaving the door open for their relationship to progress to something more.

“If he really did have an affair, they should get divorced.”

Unfortunately, those swoony moments are cut short when a client files for divorce and asks for the insurance payout. It is neither one of the first 10 clients nor a high-risk applicant. Also, because of company regulations, the client can’t file for an insurance payout before the 90-day waiting period. But the thing is: the zero percent divorce rate will be violated if the client gets divorced. Which means the company will scrap the divorce insurance policy altogether.

Rushing over to the courthouse, our team is shocked to learn the client has already signed the papers. Luckily, they still have the 4-week waiting period to try to change the client’s mind. As we come to learn, the client is a housewife who almost lost a large sum of money over a voice phishing scam. The husband gave her a lot of grief over it and has always belittled her for her bad financial decisions. That incident was the final straw for the wife, who filed for divorce, unable to tolerate her stingy and stubborn husband anymore.

Meeting the wife, she remains firm in her decision even when Han-deul and Ah-young suggest she try out couples’ therapy with her husband. Though she seems to still care for her husband, cooking him food, cleaning the house, and calling him “husband.”. Meanwhile, spotting the husband with a woman, Ki-jun and Jeon-man suspect he is having an affair, solidified by how carefree he looks after the divorce.

Since revoking the divorce might prove difficult, Ki-jun suggests they reveal the husband’s affair and declare the contract void. But Han-deul is against that idea because it would be unfair for the wife who would be left with nothing after the divorce.

It weighs on Ki-jun’s mind that Han-deul seems disappointed in him. But he only suggested that, as it didn’t seem right to stop the divorce when the involved parties were no longer happy in their marriage. So, he tried to find a way to save the divorce insurance, even if the couple got divorced. After some pondering, Han-deul gets Ki-jun’s stance and comes around. But the team is up for some big twists.

To start with, the wife still loves her husband and only filed for divorce because she has dementia and doesn’t want to be a burden on him, after watching him care for others all his life. But unbeknownst to her, the husband knew her condition but kept it a secret to avoid hurting her, all while thinking of ways to make it up to his wife for her suffering, including moving into a more comfortable house.

Also, the husband didn’t have an affair. That woman was a dealer whom he contacted to buy a sewing machine that his wife had sold in the past to support his studies. Back then, the husband promised to get back the sewing machine, but couldn’t keep his promise for 50 years. The husband doesn’t want to part ways with his wife and only agreed to the divorce since she insisted.

With the truth out in the open, the couple reconciles. Our team accomplished their mission once again, though they still have one task left: helping the couple move into the new apartment. While packing up, Han-deul and Ah-young find a notebook where the wife recorded food recipes for her husband, along with monetary gifts she kept untouched. Moreover, the wife planned to give her husband the entire payout without taking a penny for herself. The wife’s selflessness gets the husband teary-eyed, and he resolves to cherish her for the rest of his life.

As we end this week, our team is having a company dinner to celebrate their latest achievement, only to get interrupted by Na-rae telling everyone to go home as the task force team will be dissolved. Everyone is shocked, questioning what happened that things got to this point. But we are given enough snippets to realize what is going on.

Apparently, Na-rae’s superior lied to her and had her help him leak data related to the divorce insurance, claiming it would be sent to the China branch. But Na-rae’s superior sold that data to the rival company conspiring to launch an identical divorce insurance to the one our team developed. They are also the ones behind the mishap from last week regarding the promotional error. What a messy situation!

The Divorce Insurance Episodes 7 and 8 Musings

The ball is now in Na-rae’s court to take responsibility for her actions and protect the team, or remain silent and throw the team under the bus. Being tricked by her superior doesn’t excuse Na-rae’s actions, so we hope she will come clean about everything and ask the others for forgiveness.

On a lighter note, Ki-jun and Han-deul’s romance remains one of our favorite aspects about the drama, especially given how mature and honest with each other they are, with a side of playfulness that the ever-charming Lee Dong-wook pulls off fascinatingly. The mess at work will put this ship on hold, but at least Ki-jun and Han-deul have admitted they are now closer to being lovers than friends without getting into the usual denial mode.

Speaking of romance, it seems Ah-young will kiss her vow to remain single goodbye soon, seeing how she keeps falling for Woong-sik’s charm and even called him over to help with the move after wanting nothing to do with him. Unlike the others, Ah-young was the only single person who didn’t want to get into any sort of relationship. But we guess it was only because she didn’t meet the one.

Lastly, we got some progress on Jeon-man and Na-rae, too, with the latter finally realizing she had no lingering feelings for Ki-jun but was acting like that out of spite. Jeon-man is elated to hear that, asserting Na-rae is welcome to drop by his house any time after previously telling her to give him a notice 24 hours ahead of time. But of course, the situation at work might ruin everything. Hopefully, this won’t be the case, and Jeon-man will support Na-rae in making the right decision.
