“Was it really about this restaurant or that stupid pride of yours?”
Frustratingly, it was a fake-out. Yeon-joo remains oblivious to Beom-woo’s scheme. Determined to steal the recipes, Beom-woo nags Yeon-joo to make him the dish from last week, or at least tell him the recipe, and he will make it himself. But Yeon-joo’s claim that knowing the recipe doesn’t mean being able to make the dish hints that even if Beom-woo succeeds in his plan, he won’t be able to get the taste right.
Meanwhile, mad about getting his ace employee snatched, the son of Myung-suk’s former employer, Shin Chun-seung (Yoo Su-bin), sets out to cause trouble. From spreading rumors that the restaurant is about to go under, to making all sorts of baseless complaints to the district office, to blocking the entrance with his car. Not that Beom-woo will stand for it. While Yeon-joo heads to the district office, he and Myung-suk give Chun-seung a taste of his own medicine. However, this doesn’t solve the problem, yet escalates things further.
Before she left, Yeon-joo told Beom-woo to stay put. So, she is rightfully mad about being unable to take customers and the ingredients going bad because Beom-woo couldn’t hold his temper. Luckily, they reconcile soon after Yeon-joo goes to the countryside to check on a supplier she couldn’t reach on the phone, and Beom-woo tags along. Unlike they initially assumed, Chun-seung had no hand in this. The supplier hurt his back and couldn’t move. So, Yeon-joo volunteers to get things done in his stead and ropes Beom-woo into helping her.
Heading back, Yeon-joo is excited about getting extra ingredients. But an unpleasant surprise awaits her. The restaurant was set on fire. Once again, Chun-seung is the prime suspect. This time, Yeon-joo loses her temper, and Beom-woo tries to calm her down. It is true that after getting drunk, Chun-seung strutted to the restaurant. But he has no memory of what happened next. (Later, the drama reveals he is innocent, and a mysterious man is the culprit.)
Scared of getting arrested by the police, Chun-seung agrees to help get the restaurant up and running in 3 days. But we can already see how well this goes. Scolded by Myung-suk for doing a poor job, Chun-seung bursts into tears. He also knows he is a good-for-nothing. But it isn’t like he wants to live like that. He also had dreams, but his father forced him to give up on them, promising to let him inherit the restaurant in return. Moved by Chun-seung’s words, Beom-woo helps him out, and Yeon-joo counts him in while cooking food for lunch.
“Shouldn’t we put more thought into our menu selection if we want to win?”
To secure money for the repairs, Beom-woo and Yeon-joo agree to sign up for a food truck contest where the first winner gets 5 million dollars. However, there is only 15 minutes left before the application submission deadline. Just then, Chun-seung’s skills come in handy, and he drives Beom-woo there in time to apply for the contest.
After bickering over what to cook and picking out the ingredients, our quartet is all set. But there is one minor problem. Beom-woo’s family’s company is sponsoring the festival. Of course, this is no coincidence. Doing his research, Sun-woo follows Beom-woo there to mess with him. The only perk of this turn of events is doubling the prize money.
To spice things up, Young-hye is also competing as the head chef of Sun-woo’s restaurant. Their pride was hurt when the chairwoman found the food distasteful and substandard. So, they are there to defeat Beom-woo because of their inferiority complex, especially after Beom-woo remarked that Yeon-joo’s skills surpassed Young-hye’s.
With a little tweak to the menu, people start lining up in front of our quartet’s truck. The competition is intense. Yet luckily, people like their food, and they sell out before the end of the day, making Sun-woo and Young-hye bitter. Desperate to win, Sun-woo pulls a dirty trick, inviting over a famous trot singer and offering an autograph to people getting food from Young-hye’s truck. Not only that, but they also copy our quartet’s menu and sell a similar dish.
Applying a creative promoting strategy (Myung-suk and Chun-seung claim our leads are newlyweds who expect a baby soon and need money for the formula) and offering a drink Chun-seung prepared for free, people flock over to our quartet’s truck while Young-hye is way behind on orders. Naturally, our quartet is the most likely winner. But Sun-woo tampers with the results and has Young-hye as the winner. Sadly, our quartet comes in second. Everyone is sad about it, and the disappointment is palpable on Yeon-joo’s face.
Confronting Sun-woo, Beom-woo accuses him of rigging the results. Did he set the restaurant on fire, too? While it isn’t beneath Sun-woo, he isn’t the culprit, though we have yet to learn the arsonist’s identity and motives. Anyway, Beom-woo is mad at the unfairness, and the last thing he wants is to get entangled with Young-hye, who gloats about her victory, though she knows deep down that she is undeserving.
In response to Young-hye’s claim that he likes Yeon-joo, Beom-woo vehemently denies the whole thing. But guess who also blurted out that he has a crush on Yeon-joo on their way back? As we end this week, we have a confession and an abrupt kiss that we don’t know what to make of. On one side, we can tell Beom-woo is falling for Yeon-joo, as suggested by how he keeps gazing lovingly at her and gets butterflies when she is around. But on the other side, it is too soon into the plot.
We have to wait until next week to get Yeon-joo’s answer. But whatever her answer is, we hope Beom-woo will be honest this time. If he calls it a prank after getting turned down, we might deem him a hopeless case.
For someone who is seemingly sharp, it is disappointing how Yeon-joo remains clueless about Beom-woo’s real motives, despite many hints suggesting he has ulterior motives. Even her encounter with Young-hye yielded nothing, and she readily believed Young-hye was Beom-woo’s ex-girlfriend. Still, we appreciate how Yeon-joo put Young-hye in her place and remained unfazed when the latter looked down on her.
Though we are all for the sprouting romance between our leads, we can’t root for Yeon-joo to be with someone who deceives her. It is evident Beom-woo is experiencing a change of heart and genuinely wants the restaurant to take off. But he needs to come clean, especially since Sun-woo and Young-hye will gladly reveal what kind of person Beom-woo is to Yeon-joo just to hurt him and ruin his collaboration with her.
