My Dearest Nemesis Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights

“If so, are you saying Su-jeong is as intense as Ju-yeon?”

For now, Ha-jin decides to keep both secrets under wraps until she figures out what to do. Further, she learns of Ju-yeon and Shin-won’s close relationship. Through flashbacks, we grasp that Shin-won was the one who introduced Ju-yeon to the world of video games. Thus, the birth of the infamous Black Dragon. He also used to tease Ju-yeon about his puppy love. Yet unluckily, after getting dumped, Ju-yeon shut himself off and only focused on becoming the perfect successor.

Long story short: both Ha-jin and Shin-won are now aware of the dark history connecting our leads. Picturing the turmoil that might unfold once our leads realize their connection, Ha-jin and Shin-won make it their mission to separate our leads. Cue: some absurd antics to keep our leads apart. For example, Shin-won comes up with the “smart” idea to have Ju-yeon believe Su-jeong is interested in someone in the office. At first, Ju-yeon is elated, assuming it is him. But then a misunderstanding causes Ju-yeon to believe Su-jeong has feelings for Shin-won.

A jealous Ju-yeon can’t wait until the morning to check and drops by Su-jeong’s house late at night to ask if she has feelings for Shin-won and is relieved when she says she doesn’t. When asked why he doesn’t want her to have feelings for Shin-won, Ju-yeon says it is because he doesn’t like the idea. And we guess Su-jeong’s heart skipped a beat at this mini-confession of sorts.

“I want to do everything well and I can’t stand being looked down on.”

Learning that a prominent supplier adamantly refuses to do business with the department store, Su-jeong makes the trip to convince them in person. Hearing that, Ju-yeon follows her there and funnily gets grumpy when Su-jeong introduces him as her younger brother, as it is weird to say they are friends because of the age gap. (Can’t she introduce him as her boyfriend then, as it is okay to date someone younger?)

Anyway, the business trip helps bring our leads closer after a little mishap forces them to stay for the night. They bond over hating being looked down on and working hard to show people what they are made of. To Su-jeong, their similarity is unexpected. Yet, hard work aside, there’s one other commonality among our leads. Their first loves caused them pain. It is amusing to watch our leads empathize with each other over their failed romance, wholly oblivious that they are the other person in question.

“Why doesn’t she think of me as a man?”

Overhearing Su-jeong say she doesn’t think of him as a man, Ju-yeon’s scales feathers are ruffled. (What is wrong with being young?) Kissing her while drunk, Ju-yeon gets Su-jeong perplexed and has her stay up all night wondering about the reason behind the kiss. No matter how hard she racks her brain, Su-jeong can only assume it is because Ju-yeon likes her. There were also enough hints to show he is interested in her. But why did he startle her by the kiss instead of confessing his feelings first?

The next morning, the mood is awkward with Su-jeong imagining Ju-yeon’s confession and getting worried about him bullying her if she rejects him. But ….wait or it…. Ju-yeon remembers nothing as he blacked out because of the alcohol. To Su-jeong’s frustration, Ju-yeon acts calmly as if nothing happened. And it isn’t like she can smack Ju-yeon on his head to jog his memory.

At least, Ju-yeon recalls the part about Su-jeong not seeing him as a man and goes all out to change her mind. Sadly, a reality check has him turning back to perfect-heir-who-only-focuses-on-work mode. When Su-jeong drops by his office later, Ju-yeon is lukewarm and spouts nonsense. Mad, Su-jeong drops by Ju-yeon’s house and the two keep saying things they don’t mean and go back to treating each other coldly.

In the heat of the moment, Su-jeong agrees to go on a blind date. And though he tries to act unconcerned, we can see that Ju-yeon hates the idea of Su-jeong seeing another man. He even got distracted on the chairwoman’s watch after spotting Mr. Blind Date (cameo by Hong Jong-hyun) waiting for Su-jeong outside the company. Worse off, the chairwoman mentions her plans to hire a management specialist if Ju-yeon fails to meet her expectations. Still, she will have his face exposed to the media and acknowledge him as her grandson.

Now that he must be extra careful with his outside activities, Ju-yeon attends a concert for the last time. Yet he doesn’t find it as fun. Instead, he can’t take his mind off Su-jeong. And suddenly, the memory of that night returns to Ju-yeon. Throwing caution to the wind, Ju-yeon (still dressed in a flashy outfit) rushes over to see Su-jeong, declaring he remembers what happened that night and it was his first kiss.

My Dearest Nemesis Episodes 5 and 6 Musings

We appreciate the drama’s thoughtful exploration of Ju-yeon’s struggles. His backstory isn’t just used as a plot device to add tension and have a villain hindering our leads’ upcoming romance. But this arc emphasizes how suffocating it is to have satisfying someone as the sole purpose one exists. Ju-yeon wants to live happily and be treated like a human. But that cruel woman only thinks of him as an asset. If he pleases her, she will make him the successor. Yet, once he makes the slightest mistake, she will throw him in the streets.

Contrarily to that cruel woman, the supplier from before is a warm-hearted granny who only wishes for her grandson to be healthy and lead a happy life. Our hearts went out to Ju-yeon when he realized there are decent people out there supporting their grandsons and showering them with love, unlike the chairwoman who considers the company her child and gives Ju-yeon hell.

Last but not least, we want our leads to stop acting childish and go back to being honest with each other. Opening up to each other and communicating honestly brought them together, both in the past and now. So, instead of saying things they don’t mean to hurt each other, it will be much better to share what they really feel.
