When M3GAN 2.0 was first teased last year, one persistent rumor left people puzzled: could M3GAN reform? Could she fight for OUR side this time? The full trailer for the film was released today, and it lays the entire plot out on the table…and yup, that’s exactly what’s happening. It’s Terminator 2, only with sassy killer fembots. And you know what? We’re fine with this.
M3GAN survived the first film by downloading herself into a piece of electronics in Gemma and Cady’s house. When she finally reawakens, she finds herself in a…less than ideal place (we won’t spoil it, it’s a good surprise). Things have taken a turn for the worse in her absence…a corrupt weapons manufacturer has obtained the schematics for M3GAN and is using it to build a more advanced model. That model, Amelia (no capitalization or numbers here) went rogue and is now systematically hunting down and killing everyone who had a hand in her creation…including Gemma.
Gemma and Cady’s only hope is M3GAN…but can they trust her enough to let her loose? It’s a lot to put in the past, we admit. M3GAN eventually convinces them to build her a fierce new body and once she has it, she also has a new mission: defeat her more advanced model, or her creators die.
Even though M3GAN isn’t evil anymore, she hasn’t lost her edge. She has plenty of snarky comments for anyone she comes across. It’s enough to almost make Gemma regret this, but the automaton IS saving her bacon. M3GAN 2.0 stars the return of Allison Williams as Gemma, Violet McGraw as Cady and Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN, and releases June 7 in theaters.
