Looking for some free comics? IDW has announced a partnership with Webtoon to run comics from its library on the popular webcomic app. These won’t be new ones, but existing comics that came out years ago, retrofitted to read better in the Webtoon format.
The offerings are kaiju (Godzilla), thriller/horror (Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees, a comic about a domestic bear who’s also a serial murderer), and biography (George Takei’s They Called Us Enemy).
● Godzilla: Unnatural Disaster –The three-part saga featuring Godzilla’s iconic rogues gallery, epic kaiju battles, and a thrilling adventure spanning different time periods – including a trip to the underworld.
● Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees –A dark and twisted tale about Samantha, a small-town bear who lives a double life. By day, she’s the helpful hardware store owner, and by night, she’s a serial killer.
● They Called Us Enemy –The graphic memoir follows actor George Takei as he revisits his haunting childhood in American concentration camps during World War II in a gripping tale of courage, country, loyalty, and love.
It’s worth noting that IDW isn’t the first comics company to think of hopping on the platform, whether for promotional purposes or otherwise. “Rivals” like Marvel and DC, even Archie, have been there for years — the difference being they actually produce original content. It debuts on Webtoon first and then in graphic novel form later. IDW is taking the opposite approach, using Webtoon as a gateway to potentially add new fans — if they like the stories, they might buy some more current IDW comics.
The three books listed above will launch on Webtoon April 25, with additional titles to be announced at a later date.
