Hyper Knife: Episodes 7-8 (Final)

In its final week, Hyper Knife does not disappoint, and our protagonists have one last foe to overcome — with a dash of murder on the side, obviously. The surprises keep coming with some crazy-yet-misguided plans afoot to keep things interesting, and admittedly, I am rooting for both our protagonists to survive after their long overdue reconciliation.

EPISODES 7-8

Hyper Knife: Episodes 7-8 (Final)

We start this week off with the broker leading Se-ok into a trap set by the police in order to catch her for the illegal surgeries she has been performing. And luckily for Se-ok – Deok-hee intercepts the broker and leads him away to his doom. (These two really don’t bat an eyelid when it comes to “offing” someone, do they.) Young-joo takes Se-ok out of the way of the police, and the crisis is seemingly averted.

Deok-hee obviously killed the broker – we see the bloody scalpel and he sends Se-ok a text to collect the broker’s car key and Young-joo gets rid of his car. Young-joo is freaking out. To me, this is a normal reaction. But Se-ok is impressed that her mentor is murdering in the open now, just like her, and she agrees to do Deok-hee’s surgery. (I have no idea why this shocks me.) Deok-hee makes a comment about how if brains had separate DNA, his and Se-ok’s brains would be exactly the same – they are definitely cut from the same cloth. (You’re not wrong.)

Hyper Knife: Episodes 7-8 (Final)

Our protagonists put their previous quarrels aside when Ki-young dies and they meet at his funeral, and we are full circle as they arrive back to the place Deok-hee initially abandoned Se-ok in the rain. Se-ok finally gets her answer as to why Deok-hee ostracized her all those years ago. Deok-hee had wanted to kill Myung-jin on the operating table like Se-ok had first thought, but his reason was because Myung-jin wanted to take Se-ok to LA to work as a surgeon and make him lots of money. To me that is a weak reason for Deok-hee to “lose his innocence” in the operating room – the only place Deok-hee doesn’t kill people.

This disgusted Deok-hee and he wasn’t about to let his protege be poached by a money-grabber. (This felt a little possessive.) Deok-hee had felt humiliated that Se-ok had seen right through him, and this is why he ruined her life. (As you do.) Se-ok thinks this is funny, and agrees she would have killed Myung-jin too. Again, Se-ok is thrilled that Deok-hee is just like her. It’s no secret Se-ok has a screw loose, but I still somehow get surprised by her.

Hyper Knife: Episodes 7-8 (Final)

Our foe of this week’s episodes takes center stage when he discovers Se-ok was also at the scene where the broker went missing. Inspector Yang is Deok-hee’s childhood “friend” who disgusts him, as we have witnessed over the weeks. And Inspector Yang is onto our two psycho surgeons; he calls Se-ok in for questioning. Inspector Yang shows Se-ok the CCTV footage and asks her if she has been stalking Deok-hee because he ruined her life.

I suspect Inspector Yang is looking to get Se-ok in order to catch Deok-hee, since he recognized him as the killer on the CCTV footage. Little does Inspector Yang know, Se-ok is now reminiscing fondly about her mentor and I doubt she would throw Deok-hee under the bus anyway. Se-ok much prefers to take matters into her own hands when people get on the wrong side of her.

Mrs. Ra informs Deok-hee that Inspector Yang had Se-ok in the police station for three hours, and Deok-hee decides to strike a deal with Inspector Yang in order to protect Se-ok. Deok-hee lures Inspector Yang to the building he was keeping the Rolls Royce in and shows him the frozen dead body of Detective Lee. (I was hoping he hadn’t killed Detective Lee… but he did.) Deok-hee admits to all of the killings, Se-ok’s kills included, and all of the illegal surgeries.

Deok-hee suggests that he and Inspector Yang can go down together, as he has a voice recording of Detective Lee admitting how corrupt Inspector Yang is. Deok-hee is dying and he tells Detective Yang to investigate and “catch him” — but after his death — since Deok-hee won’t give the police the recording with Detective Lee’s evidence. It’s no surprise when a “tip” is called into the police the next day and it’s at the same building. Detective Lee’s body is discovered, and Deok-hee even left a glass and a cigarette butt with his DNA on it. (Deok-hee really goes all out when he wants something, doesn’t he?)

When Se-ok secretly meets Inspector Yang, he tells her not to do the surgery and to let Deok-hee die — Deok-hee needs to die for Inspector Yang to live, and that evidence can get buried along with Deok-hee. Se-ok, being the unhinged person she is, tells Inspector Yang outright that she killed the nurse at the abandoned temple and unless he wants her to ruin his plans, he needs to leave Deok-hee alone. And as Se-ok and Young-joo are leaving, Inspector Yang rams his car into theirs! (I had to drag my jaw off the floor when this happened, but it gets worse.)

Inspector Yang drags Se-ok out of the car and tries to break her fingers so she can’t operate on Deok-hee, and I was on the edge of my seat thinking he was going to get the better of her. (How do I forget that murder is always the way forward in this show?) Young-joo takes a beating from Inspector Yang in Se-ok’s place, giving her enough time to get out her trusty knife and gleefully kill Inspector Yang. (And I have no nails left to bite.)

This leads to a confrontation with Deok-hee who races to her side, even though by this point he has “disappeared” to evade the law and purposefully make his condition worse. Deok-hee asks Se-ok if she needs help with Inspector Yang’s body, and she says yes and they laugh and laugh like it’s the funniest thing ever. (Is this show making me a little unhinged too? Because even though this is clearly wrong, I liked seeing them laughing together…)

It turns out that Deok-hee’s plan is to wait for his condition to get so bad that he can’t be “fixed.” The drug he’s been taking for his pain is a banned drug that can cause anesthetic to lose power during operations. This will make Deok-hee’s surgery even more tricky — oh, and he lied about how far along his cancer was in the first place and this pisses Se-ok off even more. Se-ok is desperate to save Deok-hee now, and this is exactly how he wanted his plan to unfold.

Deok-hee thinks that if he dies on the table it will humble Se-ok and make her a better surgeon. When Se-ok has a chat with Doctor Kim (Deok-hee’s physician from the States), he tells her Deok-hee’s plan and that Deok-hee assumes Se-ok will fail. Doctor Kim, however, will not take that bet. He’s certain Se-ok can save Deok-hee, and I agree with him. Meanwhile, Deok-hee wants to break Se-ok down to get her to reach her full potential. (Bat. Shit. Crazy.)

Hyper Knife: Episodes 7-8 (Final)

As Deok-hee is in hiding, Mrs. Ra is doing his bidding, and she asks Doctor Han to come and look after Deok-hee as his health is failing him, but Deok-hee won’t agree to the surgery yet. Doctor Han begs Deok-hee not to wait for the surgery, even after Deok-hee explains how he’s doing this for Se-ok – Doctor Han doesn’t understand it and neither do I. Doctor Han offers his help by keeping Deok-hee comfortable and letting him die with dignity and peace. Doctor Han is the voice of reason, but Deok-hee isn’t having any of it. Stubborn to the bitter end.

At the very end of our show, Deok-hee is ready to have his surgery, and he wants to shake Se-ok’s hand before he “dies.” Se-ok tells him to save it: he won’t be dying today. As Se-ok sits down and asks for a scalpel, the screen goes black. (Are you kidding me!!)

Hyper Knife: Episodes 7-8 (Final)

Fear not — there is a bonus scene at the very end. Mrs. Ra had actually saved Se-ok’s dogs (thank God they didn’t die in that fire), and is bringing a black market surgery to Se-ok. As Se-ok and her team scrub in for the surgery, they are waiting for someone to join them. We only see their feet, but I like to believe that it’s Deok-hee. What a place to leave it!

This show has surprised me every week, I have never once felt a lull in the pacing. And the eccentricities and nuance both Park Eun-bin and Sol Kyung-gu have injected into this unique show have made it well worth the watch. Great show – for an acquired taste.

On a side note, I like that the brain tattoo on the back of Se-ok’s neck that was once colorless on one side is now all colored. I’m assuming that means Se-ok has reached her peak potential as a neurosurgeon after saving Deok-hee. And I’m choosing to believe that they now happily do black market surgeries together, and are less murder-y as a pair. Perhaps Doctor Han and Young-joo’s humanity will rub off on the homicidal geniuses.
