This show does not give you a minute to breathe! The net around our protagonists is tightening and it’s unclear if either of them will survive. After some more questionable choices, will they be able to reconcile and protect each other? I am actually rooting for them to team up. Either way, our penultimate week proves the unpredictability of this show is what keeps it interesting.
EPISODES 5-6
Last week we were left uncertain as to what had happened to Myung-jin when he was threatened in his car by Deok-hee. It turns out that Deok-hee had asked Mrs. Ra to acquire some land in the mountains full of wild dogs. I don’t like where this is going… Deok-hee had driven Myung-jin up there and severed his carotid artery with the intention of leaving him to be eaten by the wild dogs. (Now that is grim!)
Mrs. Ra had thought this was strange and waited around to see all of this unfold, and she explains that she saved Myung-jin who had suffered severe brain damage from this exchange. And it was Mrs. Ra who put Myung-jin in the hospital under a homeless man’s name to stop Deok-hee from becoming a murderer. (I would argue that it may be a little late to save Deok-hee. His intention was clear.)
Deok-hee goes to visit Ki-young in the hospital after his tumble last week and bumps into Se-ok. Deok-hee blames Se-ok for Ki-young’s state, suggesting she shouldn’t have been poking around. Deok-hee tells Se-ok that the police found the dog hair on the nurse’s clothes and sooner or later she will end up on the suspect list, and with Deok-hee’s condition getting worse, they are running out of time.
Se-ok asks if this is Deok-hee’s new leverage against her, and she points out that she didn’t tell anyone that Myung-jin was in that hospital so they’re even. With a parting shot, Se-ok sincerely hoping that she never sees Deok-hee again. Deok-hee is going to have to up his game if he is going to convince Se-ok to operate on him.
The net is tightening around both Deok-hee and Se-ok. Deok-hee is trying to fend off the police to help Se-ok, but blimey does he have a colorful way of going about it. Detective Lee is still missing and we have no idea what Deok-hee has done to him. Inspector Yang wants to know why Deok-hee is the last person on Detective Lee’s call log, and Deok-hee explains that Detective Lee wanted to meet him but he couldn’t go. (Hmmm, fibber.)
When Deok-he gets wind that Inspector Yang is after the black market broker who is still in the country, Deok-hee gets to him first. Deok-hee finds out what the broker knows — and of course he knows Se-ok does the black market brain surgeries. When the broker starts being lewd about Deok-hee and Se-ok’s relationship, Deok-hee slices his carotid artery out of nowhere. (I was so shocked I almost missed that this was in Deok-hee’s imagination! He didn’t actually kill the broker.)
Deok-hee is trying to keep the broker from talking to Inspector Yang by telling the broker he can’t trust the inspector. In return, the broker wants Deok-hee to perform a black market surgery. Deok-hee only agrees because the broker is trying to play both sides — the broker wouldn’t mind Inspector Yang getting rid of all of his charges, but he wants to keep Deok-hee and Se-ok on the hook for illegal surgeries.
For Se-ok, it’s the gangsters she previously operated on who are looking for her, and sweet Young-joo gets caught in the crossfire. There is a little bit of backstory to offer context about the relationship between Se-ok and Young-joo. It seems Young-joo had a malignant brain tumor when he first met Se-ok and he wasn’t interested in being operated on. Se-ok convinced Young-joo if he died on the operating table it would be less painful than leaving the tumor alone.
Young-joo had asked Se-ok to “take care of it” for him and I definitely thought she was going to kill him, but thankfully she didn’t. But this explains why Young-joo is so loyal and feels indebted to Se-ok, and Doctor Han even points out to Se-ok that Young-joo would be loyal to her to the bitter end with no questions asked. So, when the gangsters kidnap Young-joo and beat him up to find out what happened to the dead nurse, Young-joo says he did it. Young-joo tries desperately to put Se-ok off looking for him, but she finds him and has a sit down with the gang boss.
Se-ok’s nonchalance always manages to surprise me, and when the gang boss tells her to take a seat and she slouches into the chair completely unbothered by this situation. She tells him she’ll take care of it and that the gang wont get any heat from the police. Then she accepts their suggestion to get rid of the broker – I was grinning at my screen at her confidence. (Maybe I should be more like Se-ok – obviously with less murder.) Se-ok manages to get Young-joo out of there and tries to convince him to run away to the Philippines because she’s sick of everything, but Young-joo isn’t keen on the idea. And let’s face it, we can’t end things here!
The broker approaches Se-ok to do another illegal surgery, but she doesn’t want to do it as the broker had got her involved with organ trafficking. But when he reminds her she owes him money, she has to do the surgery. This means Young-joo and Doctor Han are roped into this too, so they set off to a ship to do surgery in the middle of the ocean. Se-ok is not happy to see the other surgeon who has been enlisted for this surgery.
Prior to meeting at the ship, Deok-hee had killed Se-ok’s dogs to remove the evidence and try and protect her from the police. As you can imagine, this did not go down well with Se-ok – she even rammed Deok-hee’s car with her own car a few times in anger. So, when Se-ok sees Deok-hee is the other surgeon needed for this top secret illegal operation, she beats him with an umbrella. Damn. (It would have been comical if it wasn’t so vicious.)
After the beating Deok-hee took, Doctor Han takes him to his room and tells Deok-hee he has found another surgeon who can do his surgery. Doctor Han wants Deok-hee to stop bullying Se-ok and to leave her alone. But Deok-hee is adamant that Se-ok has to do his surgery, as every bit of knowledge and skill she has came from Deok-hee’s brain. She should be grateful to him enough to do it, he says. (Another god complex surfacing.) Doctor Han gently states that the student you teach owes you nothing, and he’s not wrong.
This top secret surgery is for a cult leader, and it’s a difficult surgery — hence why it requires two surgeons. The surgical team have been told that if they don’t succeed they will not leave this ship alive. Se-ok asks Doctor Han to keep an eye on Deok-hee as his hands are shaky and of course poking around in someone’s brain with shaky hands can be dangerous. Se-ok offers to trade places with Deok-hee when he has a shaky moment during the surgery, but he’s too stubborn to let her.
It’s a relief they manage to successfully complete the surgery despite Deok-hee’s tremors. Deok-hee had made a point of telling Se-ok during the surgery that he was grateful to her, and that working with her was the most exciting and exhilarating time of his life. Se-ok seemed genuinely touched, and goes to find Deok-hee after the surgery and tells him she felt the same: it was the happiest time of her life working with him. Se-ok offers a “thank you for everything” and a deep bow of respect to Deok-hee, and it seems they have reached an understanding. (I never thought I would see this.)
Deok-hee reads Se-ok’s request for admission to the neurosurgery team while in the car on the way home, and while Se-ok narrates the letter, we see Deok-hee living the same life she is describing. Just to highlight their similarities, they both wanted to look inside their own brain because they could feel something moving around. This caused lack of focus, insomnia, and headaches — not to mention an obsession with looking at an organ that should never be opened. The only time either of them felt any peace was in the operating room when they could see inside a human brain. (Two sides of the same coin.)
At the end of our rollercoaster episodes this week, we realize the broker had another call from Inspector Yang while the surgery was happening, and Yang threatened to pin Detective Lee’s disappearance on the broker if he didn’t give him information. When they are back on dry land, the broker tries to lead Se-ok and Young-joo to the detectives in order to save his own skin. Just as Se-ok sends Young-joo to a pharmacy for her, she receives a phone call from the doctor who took her place in Boston all those years ago, and he tells her just how bad Deok-hee’s health really is.
Deok-hee intercepts the broker in the middle of a busy street and leads him down an alley leaving spots of blood in their wake — and a very surprised Se-ok looking on. My biggest question here was did the police see them?! Now that Deok-hee and Se-ok are simpatico, I want him to have the surgery and I want her to get away with everything. I’m not sure when I started rooting for these two to actually succeed with all their crazy, but it will be disappointing if Deok-hee dies and Se-ok ends up in jail. I’d be amazed if she doesn’t, though. It’s our final week next week and I almost don’t want to know how this psychotic show will end.
