We’ve scored an exclusive interview with the cast, revealing juicy behind-the-scenes details and insights into their characters.
What if you could insure your divorce? That’s the intriguing premise of “The Divorce Insurance,” a K-drama that’s already generating buzz. Lee Dong-wook takes on the role of Noh Ki-jun, a brilliant insurance expert with a hilariously complicated marital history (three divorces, anyone?).
Determined to turn his personal chaos into a groundbreaking insurance product, Ki-jun and his team embark on a journey of self-discovery, navigating the ups and downs of love, loss, and, of course, insurance policies.
We scored an exclusive peek into the minds of the “Divorce Insurance” cast via an email chat, and let’s just say, they didn’t hold back! Lee Dong-wook, Lee Da-hee, Lee Kwang-soo, and Lee Joo-bin gave us the inside scoop on their characters, the filming experience, and what viewers can expect from this highly anticipated K-drama.
Hallyu Dorama: Tell us about your characters and how you got into their heads!
Lee Dong-wook: Noh Ki-jun is an actuary who creates insurance plans. He has been married three times, divorced all three times. Because of this, he understands deeply the impact of divorce on a person’s life, which is why he comes up with the idea of creating divorce insurance. Since the series is a romantic comedy, I focused on making Ki-jun a lovable character.
Lee Joo-bin: Kang Han-deul is an underwriter at Plus General Insurance, who drafts the terms of insurance policies. She is used to people walking all over her and taking advantage of her because of her cautious disposition and kindness. Her husband divorced her a month ago. Since I haven’t personally experienced either marriage or divorce, I watched various series and movies on the topic for reference, and also interviewed people around me who had gone through it.
Lee Kwang-soo: My character is An Jeon-man, a risk surveyor at Plus General Insurance whose role is to devise efficient insurance products while minimizing risk. I prepared for my role primarily by studying the script, as it vividly brings my character to life through his lines and detailed descriptions. I also discussed how to bring my character to life with the director a lot before and after filming.
Lee Da-hee: Jeon Na-rae is a quantitative finance specialist and a special advisory quant for the New Product Development team, someone who views the world solely through the lens of investments. Since I’m not married, divorce isn’t something I can personally relate to, which made certain aspects of the role challenging. However, I prepared by seeking advice from those around me.
Hallyu Dorama: With so many K-dramas exploring divorce, what makes “Divorce Insurance” stand out?
Lee Joo-bin: Divorce, by nature, is provocative and extreme. It’s a deeply painful process where people hurt both themselves and others, but it can also be a new beginning, opening the door to happiness. In the series, I chose to focus more on life after divorce than on the process itself. I hope viewers find courage through the drama and live the rest of their lives in a way that celebrates what’s to come.
Lee Da-hee: Rather than seeing it solely as a story about divorce, I hope viewers can enjoy it as a romantic comedy. It’s also about self-discovery and the new relationships that form along the way, and I’d love for audiences to experience that journey.
Hallyu Dorama: What was the vibe on set? Any fun behind-the-scenes stories?
Lee Dong-wook: The atmosphere on set was wonderful because the cast members cared for and supported each other. The comedy elements in the story made it even more enjoyable. The director and crew are very welcoming to the cast’s improvisations and comic contributions, which makes the filming process a lot of fun.
Lee Joo-bin: Everyone was so kind and upbeat. I learned how to stay composed even in difficult situations.
Lee Kwang-soo: There definitely were challenging scenes to film, but no particular moment stands out to me since everyone on set was delightful. What I do remember is the laughter that filled the set at almost every scene.
Lee Da-hee: Everyone was truly wonderful, and because we had great chemistry, filming was always fun. One of the most memorable scenes for me was when I cried alone in a convenience store after a confrontation with the vice president.
Hallyu Dorama: Lee Kwang-soo, you and Lee Dong-wook reunited! What was that like?
Lee Kwang-soo: I have always wanted to work on a project together with Dong-wook, so I was glad to play his longtime friend this time. He was very professional and a great leader on set. I learned a lot from him, and have a lot to thank him for.
Hallyu Dorama: Lee Dong-wook, what’s next for you? Any dream genres?
Lee Dong-wook: The first thing I look for in a project is if my character or the genre is something I haven’t done before, so I would like to take on a new character or genre next time.
