At around this time last decade, Cartoon Network was the shining beacon of cable with shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show and Steven Universe gathering attention. In the corner, unnoticed, was The Amazing World of Gumball, chugging along and producing episodes in their shadow. I personally loved the show; it was very original and creative and the wit in the writing rivaled The Simpsons in its prime — but it was still overshadowed. A funny thing happened though….all those other shows completed their runs one by one, and gradually Gumball reruns began taking up more of the schedule. It took long enough, but eventually everyone knew what I knew — Gumball was one of CN’s best shows. And then it ended in 2019.
Surprised by the reruns’ performance, Cartoon Network promised that Gumball would return at some unspecified time. Boy, has that been a long wait — longer than the existence of a relevant CN itself. If the series were to return to the network today, no kid (or adult for that matter) would see it. And it can’t go to WB’s streaming service, HBO Max, because kids don’t watch that either. What to do? Make a deal with Hulu!
I’m relieved Gumball is returning in a place where people will notice it is returning. A fresh trailer appeared on the web this morning, showing off the first Gumball animation in six years (not seven, as Darwin claims). Although it might BE seven by the time the episodes finally are available. There’s no specific release date yet, only the promise that we’ll get it in 2025. The show also has a revamped title, which you can see at the end of the tease:
Because Gumball used actual kids to do the voices of its characters, they were recast throughout the original run of the show and have been recast again. This time Alkaio Thiele is playing Gumball, Hero Hunter is Gumball’s younger brother Darwin, Kinza Syed Khan as younger sister Anais (this is the first time Anais has been recast — Kyla Rae Kowalewski managed to keep the role throughout the run) Teresa Gallagher and Dan Russell return as their parents.
“We thought it was about time that Gumball and the rest of the gang woke up from their catnap, to do what they do best and delight more fans with distinctive humor, visual inventiveness and wild adventures,” said Vanessa Brookman, Warner Bros. Discover’s General Manager of International Kids, Animation & Franchise. “Guided by the immense talents of Ben, Matt, Erik and team, the new series continues Gumball’s legacy as one of the most iconic, groundbreaking and beloved Cartoon Network shows of all time.”
If you’ve never seen Gumball before, you’re in for a hilarious treat. The series is a true treasure and the fact that it’s finally coming back with the original creators and writers at the helm is excellent. We eagerly await this unspecified release date!
