…but it’s not the one you think!
Just a few months ago no one knew the fate of Fox’s 20-year-old Animation Domination block as a whole. The network had remained silent about whether or not any of its cartoons would live beyond their current episode orders…which included seemingly unkillable landmarks like The Simpsons. That uneasiness lasted up until last month, when Fox did a 180 and pulled out a massive multi-season renewal for Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons, as well as an announcement that American Dad would be moving back to the network after a decade on TBS. All these shows were re-upped for the next FOUR years. FOUR!
The only unanswered fates at that point were that of Fox’s newer cartoons, some of which were on safer ground than others. Krapopolis has a contract guaranteeing at least four seasons, and it’s currently on its second. Grimsburg and The Great North, no one knew. The latest animated comedy to join the block, Universal Basic Guys, had a two-season deal from the premiere, but was not assured anything beyond that.
Over the weekend nearly all those shows were saved. This Sunday Grimsburg and Universal Basic Guys were given a Season 3, and though it’s incredibly far out at this point, Krapopolis’ run was padded with a Season 5, assuring its run until at least 2030. What’s most surprising about this is that UBG felt like a dead show walking; it’s taken a pounding from the critics and Fox refused to say anything about its fate up to now. So that just leaves….
Sorry, folks, it’s not looking good for The Great North. The show from the Bob’s Burgers creators about an Alaskan family still has yet to hear of life beyond its current season, of which just two episodes remain. Though it’s unquestionably one of the better shows on the block, it scored dead last in Fox’s ratings last year. Its performance on Hulu might make a difference, but Fox has yet to announce its fate and you’d think if they felt confident, a renewal would’ve happened last Sunday.
Animation Domination will temporarily move to Thursdays over the summer to air episodes of Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy and Grimsburg that it didn’t have space to run over the season. Then it’ll return to its Sunday slot in the fall with The Simpsons, UBG, Krapopolis and Bob’s.
