First Night With the Duke makes things complicated for Taecyeon and Seohyun

Waking up inside a novel sounds like either the most fun adventure of your life or, depending on the genre, the most terrifying nightmare. That’s exactly what happens to ordinary university student Seohyun (Song of the Bandits) as she finds herself blasted to a fictional Joseon dynasty in KBS’s upcoming webtoon adaptation The First Night With the Duke.

Cha Seon-chaek (Seohyun) is a noblewoman with a secret: she’s actually a modern-day fangirl stuck in a story. With a scream, our protagonist finds herself inside the body of a minor character in a world much different from her own. Luckily, though, she isn’t occupying anyone important to the plot, so all she has to do is coast along and enjoy the sights. In particular, her eyes stray to the beauty of the novel’s main character Yi Beon, played by Taecyeon (Heartbeat).

Even if this turns out to all be a dream, Seon-chaek would rather not wake up as she gets saved by Yi Beon one night. With flower petals falling all around them, she makes a bold move and rewards her savior with a kiss on the lips. Given the time period, her actions are quite scandalous, and complicating matters further, it seems the two of them did more than smooch after that.

Yi Beon accuses Seon-chaek of seducing him and stealing his virginity (and methinks his heart, as well). After their night together, their roles are reversed as Yi Beon is now the one spying on his new love with a pair of broken binoculars. He says that her crimes are an act of treason, and Seon-chaek laments, “To die, or to marry? That is the question.”

While fans of the original may not recognize the setting, the plot should feel familiar enough. It’s definitely an interesting creative choice to change the story from a regency era inspired piece to a more recognizable Korean period, but hopefully, the show will be lighthearted and fun like the teaser.

Directed by PDs Lee Woong-hee (My Perfect Stranger) and Kang Soo-yeon with scripts written by Jeon Sun-young, KBS’s The First Night With the Duke opens its first chapter June 11 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.
