SUMMARY: A family just wants to live under the radar like an average ordinary family, even though they are neither average nor ordinary.
“Family Matters”, begins with a cruel ruthless woman standing in front of a group of small children CRUSHING THEIR SPIRITS! That’s what you do to innocent children. Especially children who were abandoned by their families. They’re already small but you have to make them worthless and make sure they understand that life has no hope. Don’t even think about being happy. You should be glad the “organization” has taken you in. Go ahead and try to escape. The world out there is even worse! One of the children in the group is Han Young-Soo. Not sure how she did it, but she managed to grow up and escape!
Han Young-Soo also managed to become part of a “family”. They are not related by blood but they are just as much of a family as a blood family could be. She’s the “mother”.
Baek Chul-Hee is the “father”,
Baek Gang-Sung is the “grandfather”, and
Baek Ji-Hoon and Baek Ji-Woo are the teenage twin siblings.
The family moves around a lot because … there are some bad people, a criminal organization, out there and they don’t want to get caught by them. The bad people want to use and abuse them because they have special powers and abilities. Han Young-Soo and her family try to pretend to be “normal”. She doesn’t even want the teens to know what she does or …??? … what she is …??? The twins are not allowed to be on social media. Nobody is allowed to take their pictures. They can’t even have a smartphone. The entire family must live under the radar.
But high school is not easy when students want to bully you. One of the twins beat up a gang of bullies and the family had to leave that town. One of the twins? OK. It was the girl twin. When a girl beats the crap out of a bunch of boy bullies, people tend to notice you. UUGGG! So much for living under the radar. But in Baek Ji-Woo’s defense … the bullies had it coming!
So the family moves to a new town and guess who the teens encounter as soon as they transfer to the new school. BULLIES! But these guys are far worse than the ones in the previous town. These guys have a racket going on where they force high school girls into sex slavery. They tried to do that to Baek Ji-Woo. Her brother found out about it. Then they told their mother, father, and grandfather about it. And then … uh oh! Radar or no radar, these guys made a BIG MISTAKE!
Oh! That secret that Han Young-Soo didn’t want the teens to know? Baek Ji-Hoon already knew. He knew every since he was a little kid, but never said anything. Hey! Mother wanted to keep it a secret. So he played dumb! He would have continued to pretend to be ignorant if those guys hadn’t tried to mess with his sister. Mother had to stop them.
*Her first role.
My personal rating is the same as Letterboxd.
Do you like plots about dark superheroes or people with enhanced abilities? “Family Matters” is DARK! So glad it was only 6 episodes. Try not to let the first episode scare you. Also, if you’re like me, don’t watch it before you go to bed. LOL. Some viewers would like a second season but that has not been confirmed.
