Eugene is cast as Ji Hyun-woo’s First Lady

MBN has announced the lineup for its new drama First Lady. As the title suggests, the story will be about the president and his wife, but rather than foretell the rise of a power couple, the drama will follow the days leading up to their split in a tale of intrigue, conflict, and politics.

Stepping into the titular role of First Lady Cha Soo-yeon is Eugene (The Penthouse 3). Despite achieving her dream of becoming the first lady, Soo-yeon is met with divorce papers a mere 67 days before her husband’s inauguration. This bewildering turn of events ignites a war between the married couple, and as the recognized kingmaker and hot celebrity herself, Soo-yeon will not be resigning without a fight.

Opposing Soo-yeon will be Ji Hyun-woo (Beauty and Mr. Romantic) as her husband and president-elect Hyun Min-chul. An orphaned, blue-collar worker, Min-chul rose from the bottom to the top thanks to his strong convictions and perseverance. However, it seems power has changed him since he hands his wife divorce papers for reasons unknown as soon as he wins the election.

Playing the last leg in this triangle is Lee Min-young (Perfect Marriage Revenge) as Min-chul’s close confidant and secretary. She will do anything for him as his devoted staff, but in this context, what does that entail? Will she try to convince him against going through with a scandalous divorce so soon after his win or will she take his side in a more stereotypical fashion and be entangled in his personal life? Given the track history of this cast, my money is on the latter.

Written by Kim Hyun-wan (Dream High 2, Hidden Identity) with PD Lee Ho-hyun at the helm, MBN’s First Lady held its first script reading April 13 and will begin filming later this month.
