Indie programmer Nate Peters created the first Doodle World game for the NES in 2020, and offered it on physical cartridge. Since then, Doodle World has gone on to be republished for modern platforms, the Evercade, and a “Redrawn” version that was sold through Limited Run. This was all, inevitably, leading up to the sequel, which has launched its Kickstarter this month.
Doodle World 2 has arrived, featuring the same charming “hand-drawn” graphics (harder to pull off on the NES than they look!) Seems King Eraser wasn’t as defeated as he looked back in the first game. He’s stolen all the Super Crayons again which means our hero, Doodle, must venture through five new worlds to get them back — and this time, finish the job with King Eraser. Doodle has some new moves including the “Air Dash” pulled off by hitting B and the directional pad while in midair.
Peters says the inspiration for the games came from his daughter, and many of the designs are based on her actual drawings, including the boxy, spring-eyed character you control. The “doodle” aesthetic is taken to its limit by making the enemies erasers, push-pins and other hazards a paper drawing wouldn’t like.\
The cheapest way to get your hands on Doodle World 2 is the digital version, which costs a $10 pledge. The physical NES cart takes a $40 pledge, but that’s for the cart alone — the whole set, box and all, costs $60, but that set includes a manual you can color, plus a set of crayons.
The Doodle World 2 Kickstarter will be open for just eight more days, closing on May 4. The game will start shipping this October.
